  • Anne of Green Gables: Did they check the spelling/grammer before the press release? aldehyded -> aldehydic, smocky -> smoky. 🙂

By chance, I found a shop that carries True Grace candles and I fell in love with the Blackcurrent Leaves. I actually wanted to buy it for myself but ended up giving it as a gift for a friend who finished her PhD this week. She absolutely loved it! I’m so glad that you mentioned it in your Holiday Gift Ideas post because I’ve never heard of this brand before. I don’t know if the price has gone up since you wrote it but it was more expensive; I paid €30 and it’s £25 on the website. February 20, 2014 at 7:53am Reply

    • Victoria: Blackcurrant Leaves is a fantastic candle, and if you like green notes, it’s excellent.

Yes, I saw that! Far more bizarre than aldehyded is this sentence. “As if the nature comes into the city, unwind and take a break from the urban world.” What does it mean? February 20, 2014 at 8:01am Reply

      • Austenfan: It reminds me of Chomky’s famous phrase: Colourless green ideas lying down furiously February 20, 2014 at 9:05am Reply

      • Anne of Green Gables: I’ve given up on trying to understand the enigmatic and meaningless ad copy. It reminded me of that No. 5 Brad Pitt ad. Why don’t fragrance houses hire people like perfume bloggers to write their copy? I admire their ways with words and their writing has tempted me to test and purchase new perfumes. February 20, 2014 at 10:00am Reply

        • Victoria: That confounds me too. But I’m not convinced that hiring bloggers to write press releases for perfume companies would be a good idea. A blog post is an opinion and a PR release is a marketing pitch. There are also inherent conflicts of interest. February 20, 2014 at 10:20am Reply

          • Victoria: And if all PR copy were high literature, what would we chuckle about? 🙂 February 20, 2014 at 10:23am Reply

            • Anne of Green Gables: Ha! That is also true. 🙂 February 20, 2014 at 11:00am Reply

            • Alessandra: ‘smocky’ is awesome. hahahah February 20, 2014 at 12:36pm Reply

          • Anne of Green Gables: OK, I think you’re right. It may not be such a good idea after all. But can they not hire people who can write about perfumes and scents as well as the bloggers? Perhaps, my expectations are too high. February 20, 2014 at 11:00am Reply

            • Victoria: Or at least, write grammatically correct sentences! February 20, 2014 at 11:12am Reply

              • Solanace: Or at leaat meaningful ones! 🙂 February 21, 2014 at 3:47am Reply

                • Victoria: Yes, that would be helpful too. 🙂 February 21, 2014 at 4:36am Reply

        • Ashley Anstaett: There is a No. 5 Brad Pitt ad?! February 20, 2014 at 10:31am Reply

          • Victoria: Ashley, feast your eyes! 🙂

            • Ann: I remember seeing his face (6′ x 6′!!!) all over airports (but not in the US) a couple of years back when he first started as the face of No. 5, but I never saw an ad. That link made my stomach hurt I laughed so hard! Thank you!!!

Russell Crowe may be turning into old Marlon Brando as he ages, but Brad Pitt is turning into Russell Crow. . . So I guess all is right with the world. To paraphrase: “But wherever I go, there you are. My luck. My fate. My fortune. Inevitable.” Thanks for the morning mirth! February 21, 2014 at 12:07pm Reply

      • Alessandra: hahaha, confuuuusing!! i am very excited by this candle news, anyway 🙂 February 20, 2014 at 12:33pm Reply

        • Victoria: I’m very curious to smell them too. Wood inspired by the scents of bonfire sounds very interesting. February 20, 2014 at 3:56pm Reply

    • Nicola Stephens: So glad you found and enjoyed a True Grace candle. I am eyeing either the Iris or the Rhubarb one for Spring. Lovely scents and good value. btw, that currency exchange sounds about right to me. February 20, 2014 at 9:19am Reply

      • Anne of Green Gables: Hi Nicola, Iris and Rhubarb also sound wonderful. Yes, the currency exchange is about right but I was just pointing out that it was more expensive than the price that was mentioned in the old post (£18). February 20, 2014 at 10:07am Reply

  • Ashley Anstaett: Some of these candles sound lovely, but, as mentioned, the descriptions make trying to figure out their scents a bit of an adventure.

I smelled my first Different Company fragrance yesterday. It was “Sel de Vetiver” and I really loved it! I love Sycomore and Encre Noire, but this one is so different. It really is salty and citrusy, and the vetiver is brighter than in ether Sycomore or Encre Noire. It was a treat to wear around all day. February 20, 2014 at 10:35am Reply

    • Victoria: Maybe Brad Pitt’s dialogue in Chanel No 5 ad inspired some of them. 🙂

Sel de Vetiver and Bois d’Iris are my favorites from The Different Company. Sel de Vetiver is such a delicate way to present vetiver, and yet it’s not too dainty and precious. February 20, 2014 at 10:42am Reply

  • Ashley Anstaett: Bahahahahahaha, thank you Anne and Victoria for bringing the Brad Pitt ad into my life.

As a wise man once said, “Plans disappear. Dreams take over. My fate.” Let’s all remember these words today and feel inspired by them. :-p February 20, 2014 at 10:56am Reply

    • Victoria: See, see, it all has deep profound meaning after all. 🙂 It simply takes a moment–or several–of reflection to figure it out. Thank you, Ashley and Anne, for making me smile today, when for many reasons, I feel in a gloomy mood. February 20, 2014 at 11:11am Reply

      • Jillie: Dear Victoria, your heart must be heavy at the news from Ukraine. I wish I had a magic wand ….. You bring us happiness with your blog, and it is lovely to think we might cheer you sometimes, especially right now. February 20, 2014 at 1:00pm Reply

        • Victoria: Thank you so much, Jillie! Being able to come here and chat with you takes my mind off my dark thoughts for a moment, and I’m grateful for that. February 20, 2014 at 3:57pm Reply

        • Ann: Ditto February 21, 2014 at 12:09pm Reply

          • Ann: I meant to “ditto” Jillie’s sentiments. I am very sorry about what is happening in Kiev. The news is excruciating. February 21, 2014 at 12:19pm Reply

            • Victoria: Thank you, Ann! There are news of some positive developments, so let’s hope that they’ll work out. February 21, 2014 at 3:11pm Reply

      • Ashley Anstaett: I’m so sorry to hear the news from the Ukraine and that you’re feeling down. You bring smiles to me almost everyday, so I think my thanks go to you. February 20, 2014 at 5:18pm Reply

        • Cornelia Blimber: My thanks as well. Tonight I heard Beethovens 9th Symphony in the Concerthall, with that marvellous Ode an die Freude: ‘..Deine Zauber binde wieder was die Mode streng geteilt”, and ”Diesen Kuss der ganzen Welt.” I thought of you and the Ukraine–so tragic that words like this are not often heard in the world. • Victoria: Thank you for such nice words, Ashley! February 21, 2014 at 4:27am Reply

      • Solanace: I’ve been thinking about you too, Victoria. Hope everything will soon go back to normal in Ukraine and that your loved ones are safe. Thank you for the beautiful work you do and the joy you bring to our lives. February 21, 2014 at 4:25am Reply

        • Victoria: Very much hope so too! It’s heartbreaking, devastating. February 21, 2014 at 4:47am Reply

      • Anne of Green Gables: Oh, Victoria, you don’t know how many times your blog has helped me through difficult days and I truly thank you for that. As someone who’s lived away from the home country for many years, I understand how difficult it is to watch the situation from outside and be constantly worried about the safety of loved ones. I keep praying for Ukraine and if there’s anything I can do to cheer you up, please let me know. I’d like to send you a virtual hug! February 21, 2014 at 4:49am Reply

        • Victoria: Thank you so much, Anne! The nice thoughts already mean so much, and this is more comforting than anything else. February 21, 2014 at 5:29am Reply

    • Anne of Green Gables: You should also watch hilarious parodies of that ad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTGDde7rhJE (watch from 0:25, you can also find many others on youtube). February 20, 2014 at 11:11am Reply

  • Domestic Goblin: Lumiere sounds like my cup of tea… 🙂 February 20, 2014 at 1:37pm Reply

    • Victoria: If I understand it correctly, it sounds like a powdery orange blossom, and that would be so comforting. February 20, 2014 at 3:58pm Reply

  • Kristina: Creative descriptions but it’s more visual. It doesn’t tell me much of what I’m smelling. I don’t like that every candle base is the same though. They should spice upthe design for each flavor, sort of like the candles from Bond No 9. Each one has a different face with pretty designs and colors so you know exactly which scent it is. February 20, 2014 at 5:54pm Reply

    • Victoria: That’s an interesting point, Kristina! Perhaps, there is a difference in packaging for different collections. February 21, 2014 at 4:30am Reply

  • Figuier: I like the sounds of the mossy candle a lot…though at the moment the TDC product I’m most interested in is Divine Bergamote, as part of my perfect citrus/bergamote/petitgrain perfume. Are you familiar with it at all? Le Labo’s bergamote and Bigarade Concentree are also on the list…so expensive all of them 🙁 February 21, 2014 at 6:26am Reply

    • Victoria: I love it. Yes, I’ve reviewed Divine Bergamote here a couple of years ago. It’s an excellent citrus perfume and is your like your citrus peppery and not sweet, it’s one of the best. Le Labo’s bergamot smells too flat on me, so I was never really swayed by it. February 21, 2014 at 7:57am Reply

      • Figuier: Thanks – & sorry I missed your earlier review! That’s been remedied, and I’m now keener than ever to find a sample of DB (it’s now called simply ‘Bergamote’ on the TDC website, for some reason)! February 24, 2014 at 5:14am Reply

        • Victoria: Ah, interesting! Divine Bergamote is much better than just plain Bergamote, I think. 🙂 February 24, 2014 at 10:22am Reply
