Happy May Day! I’m writing with a bouquet of lily of the valley on my desk, and although today is rainy and overcast, the delicate sweet scent of these white blossoms suggests spring and sunshine.
In other news, I wanted to let you know that Silvia and I are still accepting the early bird reservations for the Lavender Retreat in Bulgaria (June 26-30, 2023.) With the code BOISDEJASMIN you receive 15% off the retreat price and this code will be valid until May 31st. You can find more information via Silvia’s website. Of course, if you have any questions, I’m more than happy to answer them.
Scent Diary is a place to write your observations about the scents around you. Whether you write down 1 recollection or 10 matters less than simply reminding yourself to smell. You can add as many comments as you wish. You can comment today or over the course of the week; this thread will always be open. Of course, do share what perfume you’re wearing or what particularly good scented products you’ve discovered.
While looking through my articles, I found this article that I wrote a few years ago but that still remains popular and often-read: A to Z Tips for Enjoyable, Affordable and Rewarding Perfume Hobby. If you have any tips to add, I’d love to hear them.

Aurora: Happy May Day Victoria, it’s a tradition I love but doesn’t exist in the UK. So, instead today I surveyed the lilacs across the street, the purple ones not quite opened yet, but the white lilac is, I buried my nose in it, the scent is almond-like. Every year it’s an expected delight. I’ll see if I can plant a lilac tree in Provence this year. May 1, 2023 at 9:32am
Victoria: I love lilac, and whenever I pass by a shrub, I bury my face in its flowers. Such a wonderful scent! May 2, 2023 at 4:18am
Maria: Happy May day!! It’s rainy here in Québec also, but today rain smells like spring rain. I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s very different from November rain. A little bit fresher, more ozonic and less muddy. May 1, 2023 at 10:56am
Victoria: It’s true, rains at this time of year do smell differently. May 2, 2023 at 4:18am
Sue Williams: Happy May Day! We are finally getting some sunny Spring weather here in Montana and I am breaking out my lighter, citrusy scents. Layering White Citrus Bath & Body Works body cream (notes of lemon zest, grapefruit and freesia) with Guerlain Mandarin Basilic. Feel like I should keep the citrus theme going forward by having a Mimosa, but alas I am working! May 1, 2023 at 11:31am
Victoria: What a nice layering combo! May 2, 2023 at 4:19am
joan ramirez: Lilacs are such a delicate flower. For some reason, they remind me of Paris. However, I must admit to loving vanilla and the woods as well. Right now, I’m looking for a new scent to call my favorite. Victoria, it is so nice of you to include me in your scent journals.

Angela: I’m wearing a simple Lavender cologne I bought in Provence. It makes me think of summer and warmth. 🙂 May 1, 2023 at 2:13pm
Victoria: Sounds so nice. May 2, 2023 at 4:19am
Old Herbaceous: Happy May Day! I am in the process of replanting lavender in my garden, because so much died in a hard freeze this winter. One variety survived, so I’m planting more of that. It smells wonderful! May 1, 2023 at 10:15pm
Victoria: I also want to plant lavender, but I hear that it’s a bit difficult to grow. May 2, 2023 at 4:20am
Marty M: It’s coming up to winter here. We haven’t had our first frost yet but it won’t be far away. One of the notable elements in an Australian winter is how the wattles start to flower (about a third of the 900+ species flower in winter). The brilliant golden colours are enhanced by the grey and the rain of the season. I always look forward to it. It’s more a feast for the eye than the nose but I will give due consideration to the scent this year as part of my education. The colours of nature like the scents are authentic and irreplaceable.
