Too many perfumes, too little time, but we are here to help. Our “Recommend Me a Perfume” thread is open this week. You can this space to find fragrance recommendations, to share your discoveries and favorite scents, and to ask any questions about scents, aromas and flavors.
How does it work: 1. Please post your requests or questions as comments here. You can also use this space to ask any fragrance related questions. To receive recommendations that are better tailored to your tastes, you can include details on what you like and don’t like, your signature perfumes, and your budget. And please let us know what you end up sampling. 2. Then please check the thread to see if there are other requests you can answer. Your responses are really valuable for navigating the big and sometimes confusing world of perfume, so let’s help each other!

Nora Szekely: Hi Victoria and perfume lovers,
I love this book of Eco, pictured above.
My questions:
1. What makes a perfume beautiful to you?
2. What type pf scent would and Edwardian lady wear in your opinion? (Once again it’s for a performance. Scents inspire me, I always try to match my costume to a perfume that evokes the era and even the social class of the character). September 25, 2018 at 7:41am
Anne: Oh I love that you re using scent to add
Depth to your character and to inspire you. I read somewhere that Penelope Cruise do this too…
To me, an Edwardian lady would wear a floral scent, a soli floral scent, like red roses from Jo Malone????This is so insteresting and i can’t wait to read other people opinion on this. September 25, 2018 at 9:13am
Matty: I agree about Edwardian Ladies wearing a floral scent. Roses seems perfect September 25, 2018 at 9:58am
Angela Junker: I believe jasmine and lavender were strong scents of that time period as well. September 25, 2018 at 10:46am
Allison C.: Hi,
1. That’s a great question, I’ve encountered perfumes that made me feel beautiful and it’s been a quest to figure out what exactly it is – if I find another perfume with a similar combination of notes, it doesn’t usually evoke the same response.
2. Apres L’Ondee came out in 1906!
Allison C. September 25, 2018 at 9:23am
monkeytoe: There are several perfumes still in production, though certainly reformulated, from the Edwardian period. Guerlain Apres l”Ondee, Floris Special No. 127, Santa maria Novella Iris and Peau d’Espagne, and Geo Trumper Spanish Leather. September 25, 2018 at 11:47am
Aurora: The ones I find most beautiful are the ones that take turns and change during wearing.
Maybe an Edwardian lady might wear violet like Borsari Violetta di Parma or even Le Dix. September 25, 2018 at 12:52pm
maja: I am wearing L’Eau d’Hiver strangely on this warm end of summer day where I live and I think it would be a perfect for that era, Nora. September 26, 2018 at 4:32pm
Lydia: Hi Nora Szekely,
What fun questions!
A perfume is beautiful to me if it evokes a story and a mood, and if it evolves while I wear it and each stage is a pleasure to smell. I don’t like chemical-smelling scents.
I second the suggestion of a soliflore for an Edwardian character. A traditional, soft, and feminine rose, violet, lavender, or lilac would be ideal (without the oud or wood notes perfumers like to spike florals with theae days).
L’Occotine has a pretty rose scent called Roses et Reines that might work.
DSH Perfumes has some soliflores – June Bride or Parma Violet might be nice for your character. September 26, 2018 at 8:50pm
ninon: The original Grossmith perfumes date to the Edwardian Period (and earlier). Puredistance Opardu is my “Mrs. Dalloway” fragrance. September 30, 2018 at 10:29pm
katherine x: Hi Nora,
It’s from 1932, but Je Reviens by Worth, is another scent that seems fitting. And like Angela lavender, and perhaps bluebell and violet? October 4, 2018 at 11:17pm
Angela: I am wondering what you’d recommend for a perfume that has top notes of Neroli, and bottom notes of sandalwood. I realize that is a broad question with so many perfumes out there. I’m not into fruits or spices, I generally prefer white florals like neroli, jasmine, white ginger and plumeria. I love musks and ambers as well but sandalwood rules them all! September 25, 2018 at 10:44am
Anne: Have you tried eau des sens by Dyptique. I think you might like it! September 25, 2018 at 11:28am
Angela Junker: Hi Anne
I have not, and I just researched it. The top notes sound perfect but I am not a fan of patchouli. Thanks for the recommendation though! 🙂 September 25, 2018 at 11:33am
Anne: I am not a patchouli fan either, somehow it doesn’t disturb me in it at all. I didn’t even know there was patchouli in it. Give it a try one day… maybe. September 25, 2018 at 11:35am
Filomena: Eau des Sens by Dyptique is my favorite from that House and also in my top loves. I think it is beautiful but underappreciated. September 25, 2018 at 12:05pm
Aurora: Hi Angela: You might try my favorite o.b. fragrance Au Pays de la Fleur Neroli Blanc. The intense version has sandalwood in the base and no patchouli. September 25, 2018 at 1:01pm
Jennifer: Hi Angela!
I am a perfumer and we have a fragrance that is just that. Neroli and sandalwood.
Let me know if you would like to know more. September 25, 2018 at 4:03pm
Angela Junker: Thank you for your recommendation Aurora. I will check into it.
Jennifer I’d definitely love to know more. What else is in the perfume? September 25, 2018 at 9:49pm
Snaptrix: I’ve been going through some tough times – and I am bewildered to note that I don’t enjoy my usual cache of (white flower, rose) perfumes anymore.
I recently came across an unused sample of Eau Duelle – and I have fallen quite hard. I believe it is the vanilla in it that has been soothing me and calming my anxiety attacks.
I would love it if I could get recommendations on other rich vanillas – department store and reasonably priced. I’d appreciate recs for any comforting, cozy perfumes infact.
Kenzo Amour, I found too sweet and gagging unfortunately. Burberry brit rhythm seems to disappear almost immediately on me. Kenzo L’elephant is cozy but maybe headache inducing? Also, I really don’t appreciate blackcurrant or fruitiness in perfume. I do like Tam Dao and Philosykos – but again Diptyque is difficult to access and slightly out of budget for me, given my constant and compulsive usage. I am based in Dubai, if that is any help.
Thank you all for reading!
P.S. I love your blog V. Ive just been too shy to comment before. My very best wishes to you! September 25, 2018 at 11:00am
Aurora: Yves Rocher has a great non-sweet, woody vanilla Secrets d’Essences Vanille Noire.
Another possibility is for you to get the sampler from La Maison de la Vanille, you can get it from luckyscent if you are in the US and directly from La Maison de la Vanille if you are in Europe. All the samples are vanilla based and I am almost sure you will find one you like in there. My favorite is Vanille Sauvage de Madagascar a lavender vanilla which is not foody at all.
Good luck! September 26, 2018 at 5:09am
Snaptrix: Thanks! I would love to check out luckyscent. And I am RUNNING to check out Yves Rocher – it would be amazing if I could make it work! September 26, 2018 at 7:12am
Hamamelis: Do try Yves Rocher’s the Plasirs Nature Bourbonvanille range when you go there, they have lovely showergel/showeroil, handcream and Eau de Toilette, all very budget friendly! September 26, 2018 at 11:14am
Snaptrix: Thank you for this! This could be just what I need!! September 26, 2018 at 2:09pm
Snaptrix: Have you tried Elizabeth and James’ Bourbon? I’ve seen it in Sephora but somehow, I’ve never been attracted to try it out (I’m put out from having foisted on me whatever random scent Sephora has chosen that month) September 26, 2018 at 7:26am
Aurora: No, I haven’t, that particular American line is difficult to get hold of in the UK. I heard it’s good. So glad you have access to YR in Dubai.
Hope today is a good day 🙂 September 26, 2018 at 1:05pm
Snaptrix: Surprisingly, there was a tester and lone bottle of Love, Chloé at my local perfume store (it is discontinued here). It is not what I am looking for but a spritz did make me happy 🙂 September 26, 2018 at 2:15pm
Aurora: Very glad Love Chloe cheered you up, I have a bottle of it I purchased when it was released, you’re right it is discontinued here too. We may have similar tastes in perfume. Glad Hammamelis added YR Vanille Bourbon, I wasn’t aware of it and now you have 2 options instead of 1.
For La Maison de la Vanille, I forgot to add that the box of 11 samples is €10 on their site so a good deal, really and I think it gives you a 15% discount if you choose to get a bottle. But there is the question of the shipping cost of course. September 26, 2018 at 3:08pm
Snaptrix: Yes, it would be nice to have a scent twin!
I am actually checking up on the la maison site. Even with the shipping, I just maybe able to make it work. Before that, I want to exhaust all possible local options.Vanille sauvage looks glorious 🙂 September 27, 2018 at 4:09am
Lydia: Hi Snaptrix,
My favorite comfort vanilla fragrance is Barr & Co Original Scent which smells exactly like the notes listed on the charmingly vintage-looking box: vanilla, milk, oatmeal, vetiver. I think the vetiver keeps it from being too sweet or bland.
It’s reasonably priced. I got mine at Anthropologie a while back for about 35 US dollars, and I see it listed on Amazon now.
I hope happiness and tranquility fill your life soon.Take care. September 26, 2018 at 7:55pm
Snaptrix: Thank you for your wishes 🙂 Just going through some speed bumps in life – and vanilla helps 🙂
The milk note sounds very intriguing – I will surely check Barr&Co on Amazon. September 27, 2018 at 4:14am
Zaynee: Vanilla Flash by Tauerville is lovely and ships free from Switzerland. Although not sure if to Dubai – worth finding out. Have your tried Hypnotic Poison? September 26, 2018 at 8:56pm
Snaptrix: I’ve always thought Hypnotic Poison to be a bold perfume, the kind that wears you instead of the other way round – or is it the 80s version of Poison I’m thinking of?
I will check on it, I can’t recall the last time I did…Thanks for the suggestion!
It is surprisingly difficult to access perfumes here – shipping is a pain. I will check up on Vanilla Flash. September 27, 2018 at 6:35am
Raquel: Is it Lush Vanillary perfume or body spray too simple? Perhaps a hot bath with Lush Butterball or Intergalactic bath bomb would help calm down anxiety. I love vanilla. September 27, 2018 at 10:11am
Snaptrix: Oh, Vanillary is really nice. However, it is very temperamental on my skin: at times, it is perfectly well behaved, then it takes a nauseating turn. For me, this is the case with all Lush perfumes. We start off well – then they become migraine starter kits. Something to do with the essential oils and my skin, I believe. I have, sadly, relegated my Sikkim girls and Kerbside violet to the back.
I’m beginning to realise the search for the perfect vanilla is something like the perfect nude lip or red lipstick. This will take time! But I have high hopes from all the kind suggestions here September 27, 2018 at 10:46am
katherine x: Since you like white flowers – you might like the vanilla and lily mix in Baiser Vole Essence de Parfum. Although sweet is not usually my cup of tea – this is. It’s a wonderfully rich and cozy scent, with a gorgeous lily vibe. The Eau de parfum has a more subtle dose of vanilla, a little brighter but beautiful as well. October 4, 2018 at 11:26pm
Snaptrix: I really like BdV – I was in fact debating whether to go for the FB in the EDP. But something pulls me back…. at times, I find it too ethereal? Maybe it shines in the summer but it is not a cosy fall/winter scent on me. Or I should just check the essence version – which is not easily available here.
The more voluptuous white flowers+vanilla is of course, Organza. And that is just too amped for me! (Though maybe I should give it more of a chance because it is almost the exact opposite of my aesthetic?) Oh, I’m being fussy and finicky here, I know. But scenting out, trying out new perfumes is an adventure all by itself. October 8, 2018 at 3:40am
Snaptrix: I meant BV not BdV! October 8, 2018 at 3:41am
katherine x: To your last musing, yes! It’s about the journey – not the destination 🙂 October 8, 2018 at 8:53am
Chin C.: Dear perfume lovers,
I’m looking for a recommendation of a light woody scent. I enjoy green scents like Chanel No.19 EDT, Eau de Narcisse Bleu and Cristalle. I also enjoy light vetiver scents that are not overly rooty like Grey Vetiver EDT,Vetyverio EDT and Vetiver Tonka. I have tested Terre d’Hermes EDT and find it too dense. Thanks!!! September 25, 2018 at 11:09am
Katie Clark: Try Caligna by L’Artisan Parfumeur. It’s light, woody, and green. Very pretty.
*sorry for the duplication below September 25, 2018 at 12:55pm
Aurora: Maybe Atelier Cologne Bois Blonds: it has wood, incense and vetiver and is suitably light. September 25, 2018 at 1:04pm
Graham: If you find the original TDH too dense, you may still enjoy the new flanker, TDH Eau Intense Vetiver. It’s an eau de parfum, but contrary to what the name implies, it seems, to me, to be a lighter version, with the emphasis on the vetiver. September 25, 2018 at 1:05pm
WildDove: Jo Malone English Oak & Hazelnut, English Oak & Redcurrant, Wood Sage & Sea Salt, Cartier Declaration Soir (light wood and rose), TF Noir Extreme, Terre d’Hermes parfum, Molecule 01, Escentric 02, Miss Dior eau de parfum 2017. A mostly patchouli scent applied very lightly can come off as light wood, for example Coco Mlle edp, which also has the Chanel vetiver, and Allure Sensuelle edp. A single, light, diffuse spray over a wide area, or a small dab of body lotion or cream, then let it dry down for a few minutes, softens the effect in an otherwise too intense or dense fragrance. September 25, 2018 at 11:11pm
Lydia: Hi Chin C.,
I recommend trying Bracken by Amouage. It’s an interesting green scent that reminds me of both Chanel No.19 and Cristalle. September 26, 2018 at 7:39pm
Courant: If you can find Y by Yves St Laurent that is my second most loved in that family after 19. Calandre by Paco Rabanne also good. There’s a beautiful vetiver in ‘Narciso’ EDT which is the EDT version of the white cube and comes in a chunky black cube. I love that one. September 27, 2018 at 3:15pm
pocketvenus: @Chin C, perhaps you might like one of the CdGs Monocle scents? I would start with Sugi. I believe it’s an EDT. September 28, 2018 at 10:29am
ninon: I adore Nasomatto Absinth, which is a damp, earthy, vetiver with wormwood. September 30, 2018 at 10:31pm
Katie Clark: Try Caligna by L’Artisan Parfumeur. It’s light, woody, and green. Very pretty. September 25, 2018 at 12:54pm
Catherine: Hello everyone,
I posted this request on the Recommend me thread for August already – I unfortunately didn’t get an answer, but since I wrote rather late in September, I’m taking a chance and I’m asking again.
I am looking for suggestions re: layering with Bois Farine. Blind purchase – the dry down feels rather sour and unpleasant to me, but the opening is lovely and I don’t want to give up on it yet.
I tried pairing it with Comme des Garçons 2, with pretty good results. Kind of a stab in the dark – layering is new to me and I can’t explain why it works.
Does anyone know Bois Farine enough to suggest another fragrance to pair it with?
In case it helps, here’s what I like to wear these days: Narciso, Coriandre, Teatro alla Scala, Encre noire for men, Samsara, Shalimar.
Thank you! September 25, 2018 at 2:12pm
Aurora: Absolutely right don’t give up on BF. Another combination which might work would be to amplify the iris (powdery smell not sour at all) to make it softer. I will list some iris: Prada Infusion d’Iris edp and Absolue, Miller Harris Terre d’Iris, Van Cleef & Arpels Bois d’Iris, Yardley Iris. September 25, 2018 at 3:33pm
Catherine: Thank you very much for these suggestions – I will chase them down. : ) September 25, 2018 at 6:16pm
Eudora: Hello to everyone, I would like to know your opinions about Sarah Jessica Parker’s Stash. Thank you! September 25, 2018 at 2:59pm
Gabriela: Its great! I have a sample. If you enjoy woody balsamic perfumes you will enjoy it. Plus you can find it for a good price online. September 25, 2018 at 4:20pm
Eudora: Hello Gabriela. I bought it already! I think in English you say a blind buy. 20 euros! I remember reading about it, about its niche quality, labeled as unisex…Lately I’ve been enjoying “masculine” fragances so I thought it could work for me and it really does. I like it very much and I am curious about what do you think about it. I did not know it was a woody balsamic perfum but I can see it…thanks! September 25, 2018 at 4:35pm
Aurora: Gabriela: You make me want to try Stash! 🙂 September 26, 2018 at 5:11am
Ann: I have it, along with the oil, I do enjoy it quite a bit but it is extremely strong and cedar forward on me. I have been thinking about how I could possibly layer it – maybe with a sandalwood fragrance – I might just dab it here in there rather than spray. September 25, 2018 at 10:07pm
Eudora: Hello to everyone, again! I am traveling to Washington DC -from Europe. Can you recommend places related to perfumes but also skincare or whatever in DC? Thanks! September 25, 2018 at 3:10pm
Sherry: I have never been but I have heard a lot of great things: Arielle shoshana, you may want to try the self titled perfume from the perfumista / owner: https://www.arielleshoshana.com September 25, 2018 at 3:41pm
Gabriela: When I go to the USA I buy perfume online and samples and get it delivered at the hotel, it’s really worth it as you don’t have to pay so much for the shipping! September 25, 2018 at 4:21pm
Eudora: Gabriela, Yes! samples! Where do you buy samples? September 25, 2018 at 4:38pm
Gabriela: Try Luckyscent, they are great! Just make sure you buy in advance so it arrives at your hotel before you leave. I usually buy before I arrive and send an email to the hotel letting them know a package will arrive. Good luck! September 26, 2018 at 1:32am
Eudora: Thanks Gabriela for the info, I was exploring Luckyscent…It is big! September 26, 2018 at 11:40am
Ellen Byrne: Also try surrender to chance, absolutely wonderful for samples. September 30, 2018 at 1:40am
Natalie: I buy from http://theperfumedcourt.com/
Always very happy with the setvice and quality October 3, 2018 at 9:35pm
Alexa: I second the Arielle Shoshana recommendation. The staff there is great, very knowledgeable about perfume without being pushy. Well worth a trip. You should know that the Arielle Shoshana store is located just outside of Washington, DC, but is very easy to get to via subway, followed by a short (maybe 7 dollar) cab/Uber/Lyft ride. You might enjoy visiting the Tschiffely pharmacies which have multiple locations in DC. Though the selection is quite small, they have interesting colognes, soaps, and scented bath oils. Have a great trip, and let us know where you go! September 29, 2018 at 1:01pm
Eudora: Thanks Alexa, I will! The Tschiffely pharmacies sounds great. I’ve also heard about Whole Foods beauty sections, what do you think? September 29, 2018 at 4:48pm
katherine x: Whole food has a goodish selection. I like the brand 100% pure for cosmetics and skincare with only natural ingredients – though I only find them only online. I am not sure how well the skin care actually works on a chemical level. Just feel good using them. Enjoy your trip! October 4, 2018 at 11:42pm
katherine x: Eudora, I second Sherry and Alexa’s recommendation to visit https://www.arielleshoshana.com – it’s in a little shopping district called Mosaic, with several good restaurants. She carries mostly niche perfumes that you cannot get at regular department stores.
Not too far, maybe a 10 minute ride to the north is Tyson’s Corner with three department stores that I can highly recommend for perfumes: Nordstrom’s at Tyson’s corner mall (because they carry Le Labo), Neiman Marcus (large perfume selection at the mall a few minutes north of Nordstrom’s) and Saks fifth Avenue (at the same mall as Neiman Marcus). October 4, 2018 at 11:37pm
Esther Cohn: A few years ago, a woman walked by me at a theater and I loved her perfume. She said it was White Tea by Bulgari (I think it was Bulgari.) I bought it the next day after smelling it in the store. When I put it on, I couldn’t smell a thing and neither could my husband though it smelled good in the bottle. I’m wondering if there is anything with a similar smell that might last on me. September 25, 2018 at 6:31pm
Courant: I would try Bvlgari Black and Ninfeo Mio by Annick Goutal. September 26, 2018 at 3:05am
Aurora: Hello Esther: on Fragrantica two perfumes I know are listed as similar to The Blanc: Bulgari Omnia Crystalline and Atelier Cologne Oolong Infini, and others I am not familiar with L’Erbolario Te Bianco and Elizabeth Arden White Tea. Good luck. September 26, 2018 at 3:35am
Sophia DT: Hi there! I’ve been reading your blog for the better part of a year, which has inspired me too get into perfumes, as a set of various pursuits about grounding myself and enjoying life in small ways.
I had a whirlwind year, and have changed careers to become a programmer, with a lengthy unemployment as I did that. I’ve just started at my new job, a tech company of 10,000, and am feeling overwhelmed. I am living on my own for my first time, I am playing catch up as a baby programmer, and I am about to turn 30.
I would love a recommendation for a perfume that feels bold and powerful, something that makes one feel adventurous, courageous, and capable, particularly an oriental. September 25, 2018 at 11:49pm
Hamamelis: Any of the Neela Vermeires, I love Trayee but they are all very good. September 26, 2018 at 11:17am
Sophia DT: Ooo! reading up on that on lucky scent, looks AMAZING September 27, 2018 at 12:05am
Eudora: Paloma Picasso!? Attitude si everything! September 26, 2018 at 11:48am
Sophia DT: Ee! That’s been on my list forever. This is boosting me to try, thanks for the rec! September 27, 2018 at 12:05am
Danaki: Dear Sophia.
Your story is inspiring and seems parallel to mine, and I’m about to turn 40 and working my way out of my old job into a new career hopefully.
During these time, I want something grounding and no nonsense. Chanel No.19 parfum or EDT. I wouldn’t go with the edp because it rosy, soft and ladylike….so also nice but not what I need.
I wear this with a face that says :”What?!” September 27, 2018 at 12:18pm
Sophia DT: Thank you so much Danaki – so many folks love Chanel 19, maybe I just need to go out and buy it. It’s been difficult to find samples.
I wish you luck with your transition – when I get that 19, as I’m sure I shall now, I’ll think of you! September 27, 2018 at 8:14pm
Sophia DT: I would love a recommendation for a perfume that makes you feel capable and adventurous, particularly if it’s an oriental. Less interested in one that feels sexy, not because I don’t appreciate that, but because I’m looking for something that feels bold rather than inviting.
I’m 29, and it’s been a year of many transitions. I’ve changed careers, had a lengthy unemployment, and find myself in my dream job but feeling hopelessly out of depth. Looking for a scent to remind me how to tackle the unknown.
(I’ve been reading for months and accumulating samples little by little, so please know, Victoria, how much I appreciate your advice and the general philosophy of your blog.) September 25, 2018 at 11:55pm
Aurora: Maybe a unisex fragrance, something from Serge Lutens.
Unisex scents: Hermes Voyage is a great aromatics (cardamom) and woody scent, gender neutral, the parfum makes more of a statement, the EDT is perfect for summer, or maybe Serge Lutens Santal Majuscule if you like sandalwood for eg, or Ambre Sultan if you like amber or Cedre if you like cedarwood.
The most blanket of confidence, ‘don’t mess with me’ but still suitable for office perfume I have is Chanel No 19. Do you know it? Try both the EDT, dry iris and wood of EDP, more floral. September 26, 2018 at 5:22am
Aurora: or EDP not of, sorry for the typo. September 26, 2018 at 5:23am
Sophia DT: I’ve heard of Chanel 19 only through this blog, mostly have had difficulty getting a sample. Definitely pushing it up the list.
I’m not familiar with Hermes Voyage but I’ll check it out as soon as I can get to a Sephora. I really enjoyed Ambre Sultan when I’ve smelled it in the past, I’m not familiar with the other two yet.
Thank you for all the recs! September 27, 2018 at 12:09am
ninon: For strength and confidence I also like green chypres (like No. 19)…my favorite is Puredistance Antonia (I am still acquainting myself with the many vintage fragrances in this category). An oriental…maybe Bois des Iles? I haven’t sniffed the edp, but the parfum and edt are gorgeous, cozy, and shining without being ‘come hither.’ Coromandel might also fit the bill, though it’s sweeter and less aldehydic/structured. September 30, 2018 at 10:38pm
Sophia DT: I’d never heard of Puredistance Antonia! Really I wasn’t familiar with any of the Chanel offerings you noted, either, but I didn’t even know of Puredistance.
Jeez, everybody thinks of Chanel 19. I really must try it.
Thank you so much for your recommendations! September 30, 2018 at 10:59pm
ninon: You’re very welcome! No. 19 is a chilly fragrance with “good bones.” I prefer the edp and Poudre formulations to the edt, and haven’t tried vintage yet. It may not be what you’re looking for, but it’s a good fragrance to know. Good luck in your new position. We always feel “out of depth” when we begin something new and important – it’s a reflection of how much you care, not your unpreparedness for the role ; ) October 1, 2018 at 12:02pm
ninon: Sorry for the typo–out of our depth October 1, 2018 at 12:04pm
Klaas: Dear all, I was wondering if any of you have tried any of Andy Tauers perfumes? I’d like to get to know them but they are hard to find in the Netherlands, where I live so I’d love to hear about the ones you like most.
And does any of you know of a place where I could get samples/small decants of Serge Lutens’ ‘cloche’ scents? I’d love to try Iris Silver Mist, Enscence et Lavande and De Profundis, but won’t make it to Paris in the near future. Any suggestions?
Greetings from sunny Amsterdam! September 26, 2018 at 5:08am
Hamamelis: Hi Klaas, if you pass on your address to Victoria (so she can pass it on to me) I am happy to send you samples of both Andy Tauer and some of the Lutens you are looking for, Silver Mist for sure. Parfumaria sells Andy Tauer samples, and also van Nederveen cosmetics. It may take a while before I have a chance to send them to you as I am very busy, today I just have a few minutes to comment which is an exception these days! September 26, 2018 at 11:21am
Klaas: Dear Hamamelis, you’re too kind! Woon je in Nederland? Victoria, would you mind? September 26, 2018 at 4:01pm
Hamamlis: Ik woon inderdaad in Nederland! September 27, 2018 at 3:15am
Cornelia Blimber: The one I like most? Haha, none of them. I have some half empty testers of L’Air du Désert Maroccain, Une Rose Chyprée, Incense Extrême and Le Maroc pour Elle.
If you want to have them, I can give them to you. I live in Amsterdam, so you can pick them up (if that is English? sorry, Austenfan!)
If you have an empty bottle, I can make a sample of Irish Silver Mist. September 27, 2018 at 5:48am
Hamamelis: Hi Cornelia and Klaas,
Picking them up at Cornelia’s sounds a very good idea! I have the ones Cornelia is offering (the Tauers and Iris Silver Mist). Klaas if you miss something let me know then I will check what I have in my collection (also if you have other wishes than you mentioned here)! September 27, 2018 at 6:44am
Hamamelis: Hi Cornelia and Klaas, it makes the most sense that Klaas picks them up at Cornelia’s as I don’t live in Amsterdam! I only have Luten’s ISM (from the cloches). I may have other Tauers, let me know by mail if you are interested! September 27, 2018 at 6:48am
Klaas: Hey Cornelia, that sounds great. Can I ask Victoria to hook us up via email so we can arrange? Looking forwards to meeting you! Leuk! September 27, 2018 at 2:33pm
Cornelia Blimber: Of course, ask my e-mail!
Tot ziens September 28, 2018 at 4:00am
ninon: Hello! I was just in Amsterdam visiting family earlier in the month. There’s a “Taurade” base that either you like or you don’t, ime. I personally love Un Rose de Kandahar, a deep and complex rose/apricot/almond/tobacco confection. September 28, 2018 at 2:04pm
Aurora: Hello everyone:
I am in the habit of keeping my ‘big’ perfumes for home use, I feel too shy to wear some of them in public.
Do you do that too and what are your ‘big’ fragrances?
Mine are: Balenciaga Rumba, Badgley Mischka, ET White Diamond, Kenzo Jungle l’Elephant, Chopard Casmir, Guy Laroche Clandestine, Cassini, K de Krizia. September 26, 2018 at 5:29am
Klaas: Oops, I forgot to send my message as a reply. I’m copy pasting as to not mess up the order of the posts. Sorry everybody!
Hello Aurora, I know what you mean, big scents can be a lot of fun to wear, but I too think that some of them have to be worn with care in public. When Poison released in the 80’s, some restaurants refused customers wearing the fragrance……or so the myth goes.
I think that, in a sense, you are right not to wear overwhelming perfumes outside. Especially at the office or in restaurants, too much fragrance can be off putting to others. So discretion is a good thing, in my opinion.
On the other hand, just wearing your favorite fragrances at home also seems like a bad deal.
Just remember that big perfumes can be worn in (very) small quantities, and with great effect. A drop or a spritz in the hollow of the elbow will offend no one, while you stil get to enjoy your big ones outside the house for a change.
I uses to wear some pretty hefty powerhouses in my day: A lot of Guerlains (Habit Rouge, Vol de Nuit, Mitsouko and Chamade), Chanel Anthaeus, Chloe, Jules (Dior), Eau Sauvage Extreme and Scherrer. To name just a few 😉
Now I prefer lighter fare. Sel de Vetiver, Brin de Reglisse, Cardinal, Rose Ikebana, Harmatan Noir September 26, 2018 at 4:29pm
Sandra: Hi Aurora and Klaus,
Klaus, I love and have all your favorite Guerlains. I agree, if applied lightly, either one small spray or a few dabs, they are pretty easy to wear. My husband is allergic to perfume but if I apply these lightly, just dab a bit of pure perfume on, an hour before we go out together, he won’t even smell them and I get to enjoy these amazing classics.
Aurora, some of my favorite ‘big’ scents include Shalimar, Coco pure perfume, Coromandel, Carnal Flower, Aromatic Elixir….. I’m sure I’m forgetting some of my favorites!! 😂 September 26, 2018 at 6:49pm
Aurora: Hello Sandra: Thank you so much for answering my question. You and Klaas agree and I think from now on I will try your light application technique. Your list is wonderful, yes, I remember AE being very potent. It’s great that you found a way to wear scent without incommodating your husband. September 27, 2018 at 5:17am
Sandra: Thank you, Aurora!
I hope it works for you. One thing I noticed, Victoria also mentions it, perfume extrait when just dabbed on, stays close to the skin. That might be a good way to wear some perfumes with a strong signature. September 27, 2018 at 6:19am
Aurora: That’s a very good point about dabbing extrait. The only thing keeping me from having many pure parfums is the cost, though 🙁
Thank you for this excellent idea. September 27, 2018 at 12:12pm
pocketvenus: This is a great question, Aurora! For me it’s Absolue Pour Le Soir (Maison Francis Kurkdjian) and Salome (Papillon).
I was once advised that big scents can be applied behind the knees but I’d rather wear my big perfumes where I can enjoy them the most! September 28, 2018 at 10:36am
Aurora: Thank you so much Pocketvenus! Making note of Absolue pour le Soir and I’ve seen Salome mentioned here as very potent, I’m a little afraid of the cumin, a note I have trouble with, but I admire it in perfumes like Vero Kern Rubj and Mito. So glad to find out others keep their big perfumes for home too, it’s like a guilty pleasure minus the guilt.
The behind the knees tip is interesting, I suppose because it keeps the scent from rising up too much. September 29, 2018 at 5:47am
Pocketvenus: You’re most welcome, Aurora! These days it is difficult to wear the big perfumes out so perhaps more people enjoy them in private than we might expect.
I’m not familiar with any Veros, I will add them to my list of scents to try, thank you! September 30, 2018 at 6:26pm

Aurora: Thank you so much for your answer, Klaas. It seems we are similar in dealing with powerful perfumes but I’m so grateful for your encouragement about using only one or two sprays to be able to wear big perfumes outside the house. You know, I enjoy wearing them at home too, because then, I become very familiar with their development and wearing in the house makes me feel relaxed. Wow, I didn’t know that about Poison but it makes sense to me, it’s definitely one of the monsters from the 80’s. I adore all the Guerlains you list and I have just acquired a vintage Vol de Nuit which is wonderful and I congratulate you on wearing Habit Rouge, I find very easy to wear.
Thanks again 🙂 September 27, 2018 at 5:12am
Klaas: Vol de Nuit is my all time fa-vo-rite!! And vintage is the way to go because the reformulations are not working at all. I love it’s bitter darkness, there’s absolutely nothing like it. Enjoy, both inside the house and out!! September 27, 2018 at 5:18am
Lydia: I’ve been wondering if the old comcept of a signature scent is even viable these days, what with so many new perfumes being introduced every year, and with the current ones being reformulated without warning.
I am curious to know if fellow perfume-enthusiasts here have what would be called a signature scent, and if so, what is it, and what about it makes it rise above all others for you? September 26, 2018 at 9:16pm
Nora Szekely: Hi Lydia,
My best friend’s signature has been discontinued, it was Waterlove from Mexx. Her family and i hunted down a few last bottles. When she ran out of those, I tried to convert her to something else, made her smell 100+ scents and her reply was always: “I like this one but it is not Waterlove”. In the end she found a new favourite, a rather different kind of scent, Insolence by Guerlain.
So in my opinion, a signature scent is like the lover of your life. Anything else just doesn’t do it. If you lose it, you cannot easily replace and even if you do, it’s better to go for something completely different so that you don’t go on comparing the new love (eh I mean scent) to the lost one. September 27, 2018 at 8:22am
Lydia: Hi Nora Szekely,
That is so true. A perfect, beloved scent can’t be replaced by something that’s similar – it focuses your attention on all that’s missing in it. Choosing something that is also beautiful but quite different sounds like a better approach. September 30, 2018 at 5:08pm
John: Hi Lydia,
I have to admit, I often scratch my head over this question, not because I do not have a signature scent but because I do… I have been wearing Caron Pour un Homme since wandering into the Caron Boutique in NYC three years ago. At the time I had only just become interested in fragrances, and had been wearing Eau Sauvage and discovering the vexation of being spoiled for other things by a great perfume. Nevertheless, something about Eau Sauvage was not quite right for me… I always felt a bit uptight while wearing it. Since then I have owned a lot of great things, justified picking up one thing or another for seasonal reasons, or in the search of a fragrance that offers something Pour un Homme doesn’t… Its projection isn’t great after the first two hours, it softens to a skin scent quickly, and plenty of folks on Fragrantica seem to greet it with confusion or derision (it has not cracked their 4-point barrier, and probably never will.) I keep wondering why l like such a simple, old-fashioned composition.
If I were being purely objective, I’d probably choose Habit Rouge instead… I have a feeling it is the best thing in my modest collection from an artistic standpoint, and is likely the most timeless and perfectly crafted as well. These are good reasons to choose a signature scent, but for now at least it’s Pour un Homme because there is something about it I just find remarkably calming and uplifting. I suppose one of the reasons I wear scent at all is to be reminded of beauty, and Pour un Homme is one of about five fragrances I’ve experienced that has the potential to do that do that every time I put it on, regardless of the weather or time of day or my state of mind. Unlike all of the others, it does this with a remarkable economy of means, and it’s this mix of humility and low-key miraculousness that charms me the most. Also, my wife likes it and it is rather inexpensive… September 29, 2018 at 12:45am
Eudora: Hi Jonh, I feel the same about Pour un homme. And more because it’s been the family signature scent as my daughter and husband love it. We run out of it and we are fine because we have more perfumes and colognes to wear. But we’ll come back to Pour un homme because of the reasons you said so well.
I want to mention that I feel the same about Mugler’s Cologne. It also worked on the three of us and we wore it in a very special and happy time. September 29, 2018 at 6:15pm
Lydia: Hi John.
I think I know what you mean. There have been a few scents I’ve loved that were objectively nothing extraordinary, they simply felt right. I like your phrase “remarkable economy of means.”
There used to be an Australian brand called Renee that had two scents Mediterranean Lily and L’Eau – which were very understated lovely and naturally feminine floral in a sort of peaceful way.
The old Turin-Sanchez guide was distinctly unimpressed by them, but every time I wore them, it just felt right and easy and a bit happy. I think they were simply a perfectly balanced scents, nothing jarring or loud, but somehow not generic boring either. I wish they still existed. September 30, 2018 at 5:02pm
Nathalie: I find i’m losing interest in my fragrances lately and i’m looking for something different to wear on a night out. My favorites are Love Chloe by Chloe, Eau des Merveilles Hermès & Cristalle Chanel September 27, 2018 at 6:55am
Anita: Try Trussardi My name. 😊 September 27, 2018 at 10:53am
Aurora: Oh, My Name is a good recommendation, Anita, I love my bottle, powdery, floral and soft, it’s a scent which I wear more wear during the day, interesting that you wear it for going out maybe I should try do this 🙂 September 28, 2018 at 8:00am
Anita: If you like stronger perfumes, maybe La vie est belle L’Eclat or Narciso Poudrée 🙂 September 28, 2018 at 8:42am
Aurora: Thank you, Anita, for your suggestions. Narciso Poudree was a little too powdery but I love Narciso in the white cube, I haven’t smelled l’Eclat, I will try it next time I’m in town but really My Name is quite perfect I find, glad we agree on it 🙂 September 28, 2018 at 12:26pm
Nathalie: Thanks for your recommendation! I’ve tried it and it’s powdery, a little bit sweet (not too sweet)! I love it, but the longevity is not great.. i’m looking for a bigger fragrance. This is now on my wish list though, to me it’s perfect for in the office. September 28, 2018 at 8:41am
Anita: Just replied… 🙂
Bigger fragrance is YSL Manifesto l’Elixir or Narciso For Her September 28, 2018 at 8:55am
Nathalie: Thank you! I already own narciso for her (also de poudree version) but i’m going to try the YSL September 28, 2018 at 9:13am
Aurora: Hello Nathalie:
To go with something different from your favorite have you sampled Coco Noir before, if it works for you it’s a really good one for a night out, I find, especially in extrait but that’s more expensive.
You might like Serge Lutens Clair de Musc it’s more a good ‘all situations’ perfume for me soft but lasts a long time on my skin, or if you like sandalwood and cocoa his Santal Majuscule is a very good going out perfume, perfect in winter. Do you like leather in perfumes? Bottega Veneta Eau de Velours (with plum and leather) is great in this genre
Based on your tastes: Another Hermes maybe Galop (rose, leather and quince), or for a change from Eau des Merveilles but staying in the same family there is l’Elixir which is richer, I love it, or l’Ambre very good for this time of year. Or for another powdery scent like Love Chloe, have you tried Chanel Misia? The new EDP is great.
Hope this might help you a little bit. Good luck! September 28, 2018 at 7:54am
Nathalie: Thanks Aurora! Will definitely be sampling these fragrances. Serge Lutens Clair de Musc sounds divine, I think the powdery and musky should go well together. Have not even heard of Chanel Misia but will definitely give this a try! September 28, 2018 at 8:45am
Anita: I would like to buy a good perfume for fall/winter time? What do you think?
Narciso Rouge, Shalimar Souffle de perfume or Cartier La Panther? Can’t deside… 🤓 September 27, 2018 at 10:50am
Aurora: Hi Anita: my vote goes to Shalimar Souffle de Parfum, you know there is an intense version now, but I find the regular one more easygoing. September 28, 2018 at 7:36am
Anita: Thanks! I agree with you for the regular one. 🙂 September 28, 2018 at 8:35am
Teresa: Hi everyone,
I’m not looking so much for a perfume recommendation than for recommendations on how to make the top and middle notes of perfumes last.
My skin seems to absorb top and middle notes! In just seconds, the top note disappears, then in a few minutes, the middle notes disappear too, leaving just the base notes!
It was worse when I was pregnant, but even now, 2 years on, I still have this problem.
Any kind souls have a solution? September 27, 2018 at 3:00pm
Courant: My perfume eating skin is very dry. My doctor even prescribed a urea body cream (it’s French, so I’m sure it’s the very best urea cream) Try applying perfume away from dry skin areas, try small of your back, backs of knees and hair. Try misting clothing instead of skin (this is Luca Turin’s tip) September 27, 2018 at 3:25pm
Teresa: Thank you Courant! I shall try spraying on my clothes instead. September 29, 2018 at 12:11pm
Ann: recommendations I have seen work:
1) apply perfume first, then apply a neutral moisturizer on top of the perfume into your skin
2) apply perfume twice – once under clothes – then once you’re dressed on your hair and clothes
3) create your own perfumed lotion by adding perfume to a neutral base – let it marinate for hours, days, weeks – and then apply that lotion together with the perfume September 27, 2018 at 7:15pm
Teresa: Thanks Ann! Do you have any recommendations on what would be a good “neutral” lotion? September 29, 2018 at 12:12pm
Ann: I believe there is an article on this very site about this topic. I think the general idea is that any pharmacy type scent that isnt too fragrant would work – another idea that I learned on this site was to spray a cotton ball with perfume and to stick that in your undergarment . October 7, 2018 at 10:14pm
ninon: I’m continuing the arduous, but energizing project of rebuilding my life post infidelity and abandonment (and soon divorce). What scents signal independence, new beginnings, self-love, and self-possession? I love green chypres and complex florals, and was just in Paris so I’m craving “French” things out of nostalgia. Thank you! September 28, 2018 at 1:53pm
Courant: Shalimar Cologne, the new one from 2015, came out same time as Souffle, is divine. it was my most worn in the last twelve months. Or Souffle Intense. September 29, 2018 at 4:20am
ninon: Thank you, I’ve not tried the Shalimar flankers having struggled with the original (though I loved it on my grandmother). How are these different? September 29, 2018 at 10:29am
Courant: I don’t have any attachment to Shalimar, these two are stand alone. I find them uplifting and elegant, yet easy to wear, hence the suggestion. Bas de Soie by Lutens is another I have leaned towards this year and Ostara by Penhaligons (see V’s review) is outstanding but I can’t wear it every day. Heure Exquise by Goutal is complex but not sharp enough for me, I like a bit of bite. Acqua di Parma’s Iris Nobile has bite, but exudes luxury. I wish so much for you going forward, love lives on and you will find it again. September 29, 2018 at 3:05pm
Ninon: Thank you so very much, for the elaboration and suggestions, and for your wishes for and confidence in my future. It really means a great deal to me <3 September 29, 2018 at 3:12pm
Aurora: Bravo for such a positive attitude. Have you tried No 19 extrait for an floral green? Robert Piguet Bandit is very assertive, a green leather chypre. Maybe also Chanel 31, Rue Cambon, a really good classic chypre although quite recent. Or not French but a good way to treat yourself to something special, Acqua di Parma Profumo is a lovely old school chypre, warm and inviting and complex. Have you tried the green floral chypre Jacomo Silences? This one is so affordable and probably the greenest scent I own, it gets a lot of love here.
Wishing you all the best! September 29, 2018 at 5:20am
ninon: Thanks so much for your kind reply. I totally don’t have a positive attitude–the perfume is one attempt to trick me into a more hopeful posture. I’ve never tried the 19 extrait–that sounds quite interesting. I wore 31 Rue Cambon yesterday and the Cuir de Russie edp while I was in Paris, though I miss the edt. I have not tried Aqua di Parma Profumo or Jacomo Silences. Do the floral notes come through in the latter or is it straight green? I should have said I like green floral chypres. Thank you again! September 29, 2018 at 10:35am
Aurora: Hello Ninon: Yes Silences is floral too, the overall impression is of green stemmy flowers: I smell most the iris and the hyacinth. If you know Guerlain Chamade they have some similarities, Chamade is wonderful too. Enjoy your 31, rue Cambon and Cuir de Russie, are the EDT and EDP very different? September 29, 2018 at 1:19pm
Ninon: I do like Chamade, thank you! The edp formulation of CdR is well-blended and round, but, on me at least, it doesn’t develop. IIRC, the edt version was more challenging, but also more interesting. September 29, 2018 at 3:14pm
Aurora: Thank you very much for your answer about CdR, I will definitely try the EDP, it’s a pity Chanel discontinued the EDT, they should have added not switched to.
Chamade is such a good perfume, I purchased the extrait not long ago, and it’s stunning. September 29, 2018 at 5:05pm
Ann: Maybe Niki de Saint Phalle…It’s green and packs a punch, I think it’s confident and fun. My best to you 🙂 October 7, 2018 at 10:16pm
Pocketvenus: Dear Ninon,
Dusita’s Le Sillage Blanc is independent and self-possessed, and a favourite of mine. It’s inspired by Bandit but replaces Bandit’s skanky, voluptous side with a more turned-out, gentile edge. You cannot help but feel more confident wearing it! October 1, 2018 at 8:11pm
ninon: Thank you for your reply! This didn’t work when I tried it some months ago. I think I still have my sample around though…I might retest. October 1, 2018 at 8:34pm
Carys: For me, Sisley Soir de Lune ticks all these boxes. It’s the chypre I’ve been most complimented on over the years. It’s not that old, but it manages to smell old school. It got me through a particularly difficult time and helped me project the image I wanted in a new job. Good luck! October 11, 2018 at 5:06am
kimberly: During the late 1980s and early 1990s, I wore Denueve and loved it. It had so many layers and the dry down was powdery. It was discontinued and I have tried to replace this perfume for years and have not been able to come close. Any suggestions? September 29, 2018 at 12:12am
Aurora: Deneuve must have been wonderful, I’ve never had the privilege to try it but I know many regret it. I went to Fragrances of the World site for you, the Match My Favorite feature, don’t hesitate to try it, although it can be a bit hit and miss. The results are: Claus Porto Agua Vetiver, Urban Scents Bliss Me, Slumberhouse Grev, so maybe you could sample these. Also, have a look at Fragrantica, Deneuve is listed and among several ‘reminds me of’, there is for eg Carthusia Lady, I don’t know it but own 2 Carthusia perfumes and they are really good quality.
Hope you will get more answers, good luck with your search! September 29, 2018 at 5:56am
ninon: I’m curious about this, too, though I’ve also never tried Deneuve. I believe some people find DSH Vert pour Madame to be similar?. September 29, 2018 at 10:40am
Susan: Ninon– I just read your posts. I went through what you’re going through 3 years ago and I’m on the other side now if you need someone to run things last. Just reply if you see this and want to talk, then I’ll give you my email address. October 16, 2018 at 10:18pm
Courant: I bought Clinique’s ‘Beyond Rose’ a few months ago. It’s an underrated gem of a fragrance and well worth checking out. September 29, 2018 at 5:52am
Aurora: Thank you very much for sharing, Courant, enjoy your Beyond Rose. September 30, 2018 at 5:01am
Stephanie: Hello,
I’m curious what your suggestions are for a man whose favorite candle is Diptyque’s Feu de Bois? He tried Serge Lutens’ Chene and it didn’t suit. October 3, 2018 at 11:13am
Victoria: I’ll recommend a woody perfume like Diptyque Tam Dao, Marc Jacobs Bang, L’Artisan Timbuktu and Atelier Cologne Bois Blonds. October 3, 2018 at 2:18pm
Stephanie: Thank you very much for the suggestions! Off to order samples! October 5, 2018 at 6:16pm
