Recommend Me a Perfume : November 2023

Our “Recommend Me a Perfume” thread is open this week. You can use this space to find perfume recommendations, to share your discoveries and favorite scents, and to ask any questions about scents, aromas and flavors. Or you can just tell us what perfume you are wearing!

How does it work: 1. Please post your requests or questions as comments here. You can also use this space to ask any fragrance related questions. To receive recommendations that are better tailored to your tastes, you can include details on what you like and don’t like, your signature perfumes, and your budget. And please let us know what you end up sampling. 2. Then please check the thread to see if there are other requests you can answer. Your responses are really valuable for navigating the big and sometimes confusing world of perfume, so let’s help each other!

To make this thread easier to read, when you reply to someone, please click on the blue “reply” link under their comment.

  • Gayle Gorman: I am currently still using “Antonia’s Flowers”
which I adore…but soon it will be gone forever.
    Can anyone suggest something wonderful?
Jo Malone “Freesia & Pear” does not do it for me at all.
    Thanks! November 27, 2023 at 9:27am Reply

    • Robin Gibbs: Yet another of my favorite fragrances gone forever. I am dying to hear other suggestions here, even though I have searched far and wide. November 27, 2023 at 9:59am Reply

    • PrincessTonk: I loved Antonia’s Flowers in the late ‘90s and had transitioned to Bulgari Voile de Jasmin (+ Bulgari pour Femme, stronger). I don’t know if they reproduce any of the AF feeling but they are together in my scent memory. November 27, 2023 at 11:35am Reply

  • Nikos: Hello everyone. I don’t know if it’s true but it seems Sarrasins is discontinued. I haven’t seen it on the European Lutens website for almost a year now. And yes there is a hole on the wall from banging my head that I never got myself to buy a bottle.
Is it futile to try to find anything close to such masterpiece?
Peace and health to all. November 27, 2023 at 10:00am Reply

    • Alityke: Nikos, sadly it does seem Lutens is culling some older fragrances. One or two that disappeared have come back is a different packaging & higher cost. I’m hoping Sarrasins will be one. I finished my bottle & was so disappointed it was not longer on the website.
There again Lutens have been a bit odd recently. There was the change in name of MKK that is now MKK again.
If anyone can suggest anything like Sarrasins please do. November 27, 2023 at 2:26pm Reply

      • Nikos: I don’t know what’s worse anymore. Discontinuing a fragrance, reformulating it or a new much much higher price tag. Sad. November 28, 2023 at 11:27am Reply

    • SnowyOwl: I’m in the US and it is on the US website right now. In fact I just ordered a bottle as they have deals for Cyber Monday. I read also that it is on the French Lutens website. Is there anyway to order and ship to where you are? I’m sorry I don’t have a substitute but share in your love of this perfume. November 27, 2023 at 4:07pm Reply

      • Alityke: Hi Snowy Owl
Yes Sarrasins is still available in the States & the Lutens fr site. Not available in the uk or eu sites.
I’m in the UK & neither the US or Fr will ship here November 27, 2023 at 5:04pm Reply

  • Jeff: Hello, everyone. I love a good fig fragrance and already have a couple in the rotation, but I’m looking for something more lactonic/gourmand/sweet/nutty. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help! November 27, 2023 at 10:11am Reply

    • Aurora: Hi Jeff, A relatively flying under the radar scent, By Terry Flagrant Délice tick these boxes for me, you might like it. November 27, 2023 at 12:07pm Reply

    • Heidi Czerwiec: I’m assuming you’ve tried L’Artisan’s Premier Figuier? It seems to hit all those notes. I also really enjoy Neela Vermeire’s Ashoka, though it’s got a greener take, not quite so sweet. November 27, 2023 at 5:47pm Reply

    • Cathy Beshore: Sonoma Scent Studio Fig Tree. I’m actually wearing it today. It is a beautiful, creamy fragrance. You can buy samples on their website. November 27, 2023 at 6:09pm Reply

    • Sylvia: My favourite fig fragrance is Fig my Kove from The Zoo. Green, woody and natural smelling. November 28, 2023 at 7:03am Reply

  • Amy McLaughlin: Hello, Victoria and everyone. I have loved the great chypres since my teens, and it’s a shame it never occurred to me to stockpile a few of them. Are there any other lovers of Miss Dior (in its vintage incarnation) who have found scents that satisfy? I bought a bottle on eBay a couple of years ago, and it was fine for a while but turned. November 27, 2023 at 10:36am Reply

    • Aurora: Hi Amy: Bottega Veneta has this classic feel of vintage Miss Dior although they are different perfumes, but it has recently been discontinued, still to be found but pricier now. November 27, 2023 at 12:03pm Reply

      • Amy Kritz: Thank you so much for replying, Aurora. I have never tried Bottega Veneta and I will search it out! November 27, 2023 at 1:06pm Reply

      • Amy McLaughlin: Hi Aurora, I thought I responded earlier but it seemed not to take. Thank you, I’ve never tried Bottega Veneta and so I will give it a shot! November 27, 2023 at 1:12pm Reply

    • Kaisa: Vintage Miss Dior is so beautiful! I have to admit I haven’t found anything quite like it, but you could try Dusita: their Sillage Blanc is interesting. For me it’s even too angular (Miss Dior feels cuddly in comparison). Fleur de Lalita is a beautiful floral with galbanum, not like Miss Dior but very nice and “ladylike” without feeling stuffy. And if you love other chypres like Mitsouko and Femme, I’d highly recommend Chypre-Siam from Rogue. It’s gorgeous. November 27, 2023 at 12:50pm Reply

      • Amy McLaughlin: Thank you, Kaisa. Like you, I just haven’t found anything quite like vintage Miss Dior. I did try Chypre Siam and liked it, I will get another sample — I’m probably too easily disappointed because what I want is — Miss Dior.

I appreciate the other suggestions, those scents are unfamiliar to me, I will try them. November 27, 2023 at 1:10pm Reply

    • Alityke: Hi Amy
Are you familiar with Sisley Eau de Soir? Slated by Turin & Sanchez but they are very wrong! It’s a touch more citric than vintage Miss Dior though.
Have you tried current current Miss Dior Originale? Whilst it isn’t as deep as vintage it is still good November 27, 2023 at 2:32pm Reply

      • Amy McLaughlin: Hi Alityke, I have heard others praise the Sisley but have not tried it, and I am glad to hear a favorable review of the current Miss Dior Originale. I appreciate the suggestions! November 27, 2023 at 3:27pm Reply

    • Heidi Czerwiec: You might really enjoy Bogue’s scents–they’re great at mimicking that vintage vibe. Their MAAI in particular is fantastic. I’ve always thought vintage Miss Dior had a fantastically skanky note to it, so you might consider trying Papillon’s Salomé. November 27, 2023 at 5:50pm Reply

      • Amy McLaughlin: Thank you, Heidi, I haven’t tried those, so thanks for the suggestions. I suppose Miss Dior does have a skanky aspect, but to me it’s the sense of being in the woods, or at any rate in a green space, that I love. November 27, 2023 at 9:55pm Reply

      • Kaisa: I agree Maai is great, unfortunately I can’t wear it because the tuberose doesn’t please me. Salome is very dirty (though great) but not in any way comparable to Miss Dior imo. Just saying ymmv with these. November 29, 2023 at 9:26am Reply

    • Rene Saller: Have you tried any of the classic chypres like Bernard Chant’s Aromatics Elixir (Clinique), or the original Private Collection by Estee Lauder? I would also recommend EL’s Azurée (not a strict chypre but very chyprelike) and Alliage. If you can find a vintage bottle of Unforgettable by Avon, that’s a very good leathery chypre. I also like classic Halston for women, and that’s crazy cheap now. You might also enjoy Miss Balmain. November 27, 2023 at 7:22pm Reply

      • Amy McLaughlin: Thank you, Rene, I do have a small bottle of EL Private Collection, and I enjoy wearing it occasionally, and I have owned Aliage, though not recently, and I did like it very much.

It’s funny, having just watched the Halston docudrama, I was trying to remember the scent. I used to wear Ivoire, but have never sniffed Miss Balmain. Many thanks! November 28, 2023 at 8:44am Reply

  • Lee: Hi all! I’m interested in trying a new almond fragrance. I currently have Acqua di Parma Mandorlo di Sicilia, which I like but find powdery. I’m looking for more of a gourmand almond scent that’s a little sweeter. Thanks! November 27, 2023 at 1:06pm Reply

    • Emily: I’ve been enjoying the cuddly nostalgia of Hypnotic Poison lately. Draining a decant & may need to start looking for a well-priced full bottle. Not super-sweet but vanilla is prevalent.

For something similar but more edible, Profumum’s sugared almond Confetto is worth exploring. Based on Italian wedding candy (Jordan almonds).

Caswell-Massey also carries a sheer, charming, straightforward almond scent for more everyday wear. November 27, 2023 at 2:18pm Reply

      • Lee: Thank you Emily, that’s very helpful! Great that you mention Italian wedding candy. I was thinking about marzipan or latte di mandorla myself. November 27, 2023 at 2:22pm Reply

    • Nina Z: Alessandro by Mazzolari is sweeter (has a honey note) and more gourmand. November 27, 2023 at 2:21pm Reply

      • Lee: Thanks so much, will look into, sounds intriguing! November 27, 2023 at 3:01pm Reply

    • Aurora: Hi Lee: You could try Réminiscence Dragée and their Héliotrope too, both are more gourmand than Mandorlo di Sicilia (which I like very much by the way) and it’s an affordable line. The most potent almond I know is Etro Heliotrope, interesting scent but a little too much for me and not very sweet. There is also Heeley l’Amandière which is good but I think it’s been changed to an extrait now IIRC which I haven’t tried. November 27, 2023 at 6:11pm Reply

      • Lee: Thank you, I like the heliotrope suggestions. The only one I’ve tried is L’Eau D’Hiver, and I love it, so I get the connection! November 27, 2023 at 6:19pm Reply

    • Damla: Interestingly, Lush’s Turmeric Latte has a prominent almond note! November 28, 2023 at 12:32am Reply

      • Lee: Thank you, seems like a budget-friendly option!! November 28, 2023 at 10:54am Reply

    • Melissa T: Hi Lee! One that I recently tried is DSH Perfumes Marzipan. It is a sweet almond and very nice to wear! You also have a choice as to what concentration and form that you want the perfume. I actually chose to have mine added to a lotion for a Christmas gift for my sister. December 26, 2023 at 6:56am Reply

      • Lee: Thank you, Melissa! I’m not familiar with DSH and will be sure to check it out! December 26, 2023 at 12:37pm Reply

      • Sarah B Patton: How do you have a perfume added to a lotion? That sounds like a wonderful idea. December 26, 2023 at 1:34pm Reply

  • CristinaM: Iris silver mist. I heard it’s being discontinued. And I am already mourning.
Anything that might be remotely similar?
    Thx!!! November 27, 2023 at 2:29pm Reply

    • Alityke: I’ve just searched the Lutens websites. ISM is back in stock on some of them. Along with Boxeuses November 27, 2023 at 5:07pm Reply

  • Klaas: Ok fragrance lovers…..what is the most luscious, decadent, complex, non-sweet smelling rose fragrance out there? I’ve never worn any rose fragrances ever before, but suddenly feel very much inspired to try one……it must be the depressing grey and wet weather we’ve been having here for weeks now…..

All suggestions are welcome as this is way out of my ball park!

Thank you! November 27, 2023 at 5:57pm Reply

    • Rene Saller: I love all kinds of roses, from the hyperrealistic to the soapy to the gourmand, but one of the best I can think of is Rose Flash by Tauerville. It’s also relatively inexpensive, considering the uniformly high standards of quality for the ingredients.

Many of the Middle Eastern houses do extraordinary rose fragrances, sometimes better than the ones they’re duping. Infini Rose is wonderful–supposedly a dupe for Atomic Rose, but I think it stands on its own–and Delilah, a crazy inexpensive dupe of Delina, is also quite good if you can take the rhubarb note at the top (also iin Delina). If you can do deeper, incensier rose perfumes, I highly recommend Tanasuk and Club de Nuit Intense White Impériale. Those might be a bit sweet and/or jammy for you, though. If you like a lighter, more patchouli-vetiver supported rose, Velvet Rose is rather nice. I also like make-uppy and powdery rose scentsl ike Lipstick Rose by Frederic Malle. Rose Rouge by Van Cleef & Arpels is good, too, as is Aerin Rose de Grasse.

And if you just want a straightup hyperrealistic rose scent, it’s hard to beat The Perfumer’s Workshop Tea Rose. November 27, 2023 at 7:30pm Reply

      • Klaas: Rose Flash! I love Andy Tauers because he’s a maverick and he has come up with some gorgeous fragrances in the past! I’ll check it out, thank you! December 11, 2023 at 9:23am Reply

    • Hamamelis: Hi Klaas, I think there is only one rose that ticks all your boxes ;-)….the so very beautiful Mohur! Available in travel size so it doesn’t have to break the bank. November 28, 2023 at 6:49am Reply

      • Klaas: I’ve been wanting to try her fragrances for the longest time! I think a sample set for Christmas 🎄

        Dankjewel! December 11, 2023 at 9:24am Reply

    • CristinaM: Rose de Nuit, Lutens. I have just seen a few bottles on Vinted if you’re interested November 28, 2023 at 12:43pm Reply

    • Aurora: Hello Klaas, some more roses, I think you might like to try Caron Parfum Sacré, a myrrhe rose, very dense and incensey but lifted by a pepper note, another, this time gothic rose would be ELDO Eau de Protection. November 28, 2023 at 3:44pm Reply

      • Klaas: Parfum Sacré is such a classic and I don’t know it…….it sounds amazing! Thank you so much Aurora December 11, 2023 at 9:26am Reply

        • Sarah B Patton: Parfum Sacre! I haven’t had it so long. So delicious. I don’t know if it’s mentioned below but I also love Rive Gauche. Have had that in steady rotation for a decade now. Gettable and so nice in the spring/summer. December 26, 2023 at 1:36pm Reply

    • Alityke: Hi Klass
I recently tried Matiere Premiere Radical Rose, a huge rose in a very modern style.
If you want to try classic rose/patch combos that lean dark & gothic try LAP Voleur de Roses & 4160Tuesdays Court of Ravens or Killer Rose. Even YSL Paris might be worth a sniff if you really want “ROSE” November 29, 2023 at 3:31am Reply

    • Alityke: I forgot Rochas Tocade. I prefer the current post 2013 version to vintage. It’s now a very plush vanilla rose without the new doll’s head plastic texture November 29, 2023 at 3:35am Reply

    • Sebastian: Hi Klaas,

to add a few more of my favorites:

Amouage produce wonderful roses. In terms of lusciousness and complexity, one of the very best is the dark and spicy extrait version of Lyric Woman (I mean “Woman”, not “Man”, and not the EdP).

A favorite in the rose/incense territory is “Opus XII – Rose Incense”. I’m not sure about the “decadent” part here, but it is a rich and elegant perfume.

Portrait of a Lady is a classic rose-incense, and leaning very masculine.

I am a great fan of Diane St. Clair. “Seeking Balance” is a great rose perfume. Perfect and floating, dense, yet not bulky and heavy.
Perfect balance between the roses and the white and sweet flowers. Beautiful. Becomes quite sweet in between, but then brightens up again with oakmoss and grassy vetiver. The DD of cistus and iris is to die for. The whole perfume radiates a contemplative beauty. Unfortunately, St. Clair Scents do not ship to Europe, so their stuff is difficult to find. (If you get the chance, also try at least Casablanca, Pandora, Gardener’s Glove, and Song of Aubrac, but that’s beside the point here.)

If you want a yummier rose, I just recently smelled Thirty-Three by Ex Idolo. That is a sweet and jam-like rose-patchouli that turns powdery, dry and woody. (Very nice woods.) Sweet rose-patchouli perfumes there are more than one can count.

If you can stand a lot of sweetness (I seem to remember that you can’t) there are many rose perfumes with raspberry notes or some such. An extreme example would be “Ismail Efendi – The Rose Bandit” by Anka Kuş. I can imagine one might pull it off in cold weather.

I believe that many rose fragrances do not smell much like the flower, even the best rose ottos and absolutes lose complexity. However, they are expensive, and most rose fragrances contain synthetics that are nice but extremely one-dimensional and flat. In my view, the above-mentioned Tea Rose (a straught rose soliflore) falls into this category. I use it as a laundry scent, for which purpose it is very suitable and indeed very nice.

In contrast, The most beautiful rose soliflore (or almost soliflore) that comes to my mind is Tobacco Rose by Papillon. Fresh rose embedded in warm hay with smooth wax and a light hint of ambergris – just brilliantly made.

Then there is the genre of rose-chypres. Which tend to be non-sweet and complex, but definitely not lusciously or decadently rosy, so I believe you are not looking for one of them. If you do, a nice, modern and original one that gives me a kind of blue impression (the color, not the emotion) would be “French Affair” by Ex Nihilo, but there a countless others. (Hey, what about the beautiful rose in Mitsouko?)

I am sure you will get many more recommendations, more than you can possibly try. November 29, 2023 at 3:45am Reply

      • Klaas: You know what, I’ve never had the courage to try Amouage….they have so many and oh, they are so costly. When I walk past their booth at the department store I never dare to go and spritz some.

But it is a very interesting house, and maybe this rose expedition offers me the perfect excuse to go and dive in for a change.

Thank you for these suggestions! December 11, 2023 at 9:31am Reply

    • Kaisa: Some excellent suggestions here. I second Mohur, Lyric woman (though I never saw an extrait of it…), Ormonde Jayne Ta’if is lovely but for me just a tad too sweet (but then I’m allergic to sweetness). Epic woman for something spicy, Mon Nom Est Rouge also spicy and dark, La Fille de Berlin for a dark red velvety rose almost but not quite soliflore… and I really like Oud Palao and Thirty-three. November 29, 2023 at 9:33am Reply

      • Klaas: I’m not a fan of Lutens. There, I’ve said it 😂
The only exception being Féminité du Bois, but maybe I should go and retry some of his roses with an open mind.

Like you, I’m not keen on sweet notes in fragrance so I’m glad.

Thank you, Kaisa! December 11, 2023 at 9:35am Reply

    • John Luna: Hi Klaas,

I am sorry to say that it is out of my realm of experience as well, but I just wanted to wish you a wonderful journey. The thought of opening a door like that out of nowhere is very inspiring. Good luck! December 4, 2023 at 5:57pm Reply

      • Klaas: Hahaha, inspiring but a little daunting as well. Rose fragrances are the total opposite of what I usually wear, so I’m not quite sure where this craving comes from or where it will take me. Well, to the Amouage counter for starts.

All the best to you! December 11, 2023 at 9:38am Reply

  • Alityke: Hi everyone. Thank you Victoria for this monthly open forum.

Please can anyone recommend a substitute of Goutal’s Les Nuits d’Hadrien? I miss it so much & cannot get it out of my head & olfactory memory November 27, 2023 at 6:10pm Reply

    • Aurora: Hello Alityke,

I never had the pleasure of trying LNd’H but reading its scent profile I am reminded of Cartier Déclaration a little bit, have you tried it? November 28, 2023 at 4:28pm Reply

      • Alityke: No but I will thank you. Sometimes hunting the resale & grey markets makes the longings worse November 29, 2023 at 3:23am Reply

    • Jane Trewhella: I loved Les Nuits d’hadrian, too. Am very interested to try Aurora’s suggestion of Déclaration. Thank you, both, for reminding me of it. December 25, 2023 at 10:04am Reply

  • Lauren: I am looking for winter date-night/going out fragrance suggestions with the following qualities:

    – Unique/bold feminine signature that is also wearable
    – Projects in cold weather
    – Nothing vintage/older than 1990s
    – Nothing too expensive
    – Reasonably accessible to smell before purchasing
    – Has survived the current lilial lyral reformulations

For reference here are some scents I already own and love: Angel, Alien, Hypnotic Poison, Badgley Mischka, L’Air du Desert Marocain, Gucci Rush, Dior Dune, Kai, Beyond Paradise, Bvlgari Black, Narciso Rodriguez for Her, Guerlain Insolence November 28, 2023 at 11:07am Reply

    • Emily: Possibly pushing the vintage boundary, but travel-sized decants of Kenzo’s 90s classic Jungle L’Elephant are currently available on the grey market sites for under $12. By sillage master Dominique Ropion himself. Victoria rated it 5 stars here a decade ago.

Lots of amber & spice, very warm sexy. November 28, 2023 at 4:30pm Reply

      • Lauren: That’s an awesome idea! I’ve always wanted to check that one out but for whatever reason I thought it was discontinued. November 29, 2023 at 9:41am Reply

        • Donna Harris: fragrancenet.com regularly carries Kenzo’s Jungle L’Elephant… I have a stockplie in my closet, it’s my very favorite fragrance of all. December 9, 2023 at 11:35pm Reply

    • Alityke: These may be a bit off the wall as recommendations as they aren’t easy to sample but a whole bottle costs the same as a decant of something more boojee. Two beautiful spiced ambers are Mauboussin in the glass pyramid bottle (Christine Nagel) & Adam Levine for women (Yann Vasnier) very easy to find on the grey market & both less than £15 in the UK. Both need a period of maceration & standing before trying them.
I would also recommend you find a Serge Lutens stockist & try his offerings. Many are classics of the 21st century. Ambre Sultan, Arabie, Ecrin de Fumee all meet your needs. Or buy samples, many online sample retailers offer them November 29, 2023 at 3:52am Reply

    • Adam: A couple that come to mind are Gris Charnel by BDK and Spell 125 by Papillon. Happy hunting! December 25, 2023 at 5:01pm Reply

  • Martin: Hello everybody! I have a quite simple question for everybody: Do you think a man can pull off wearing Guerlain Mitsouko? November 28, 2023 at 11:07am Reply

    • Nikos: Yes. Many say that most old school chypres have turned unisex to today’s standards and I believe it’s true.
If you like it and feel comfortable with it wear it. November 28, 2023 at 11:21am Reply

      • Martin: Thanks Nikos! Do you have any names for me, other chypres I should try? November 28, 2023 at 11:32am Reply

        • Nikos: I second Alityke’s list. I would also add Halston’s classic. Again a Bernard Chant creation and wears amazingly on a guy. November 30, 2023 at 1:48am Reply

    • Alityke: Yes. Classic chypres are completely non-gendered. Saying that, I’d recommend Chanel Pour Monsieur edt, EL Azuree & her brother Aramis, Clinique Aromatics Elixir. Bernard Chant authored the last three & his work may be your aesthetic November 28, 2023 at 2:11pm Reply

    • Sebastian: Absolutely effortlessly. At least I do. Alityke’s list is great regarding further suggestions. Especially leathery chypres like Azurée can make a very masculine impression nowadays. November 29, 2023 at 3:54am Reply

  • Gisele: Hi, can you recommend an oil that reminds me of opal?
Sonoma Perfume Studio November 28, 2023 at 11:08am Reply

    • Aurora: Hello Gisele, we don’t have Sonoma Scent Studio where I am (UK), as it is described as a vanilla musk, you might look for some of the Al Haramain oils, sold worldwide, they are affordable, they have a Musk black Vanilla maybe worth trying? Or maybe someone else will have an idea. Good luck. November 29, 2023 at 2:37pm Reply

  • Tamasin: I was given a 2mls sample of Arabesque by Ormonde Jayne a few weeks ago when I bought a candle. I actively disliked the perfume when I first tried it on, but I perservered for a few days (usually I wouldn’t try again, but I was sitting there on the side, looking forlorn). I think the active dislike stemmed from the new notes, wood? blackcurrant and saffron? Long story short, I just ordered a bottle. November 30, 2023 at 4:00am Reply

    • Klaas: 😂 December 11, 2023 at 10:50am Reply

  • A: Could anyone recommend an orange blossom (more white floral than green) scent for the wintertime?

I find myself gravitating to Neroli Oranger by Matiere Premiere, which is so warm and indolic and beautiful! I just wish it had more of a “kick” for the cold weather. Maybe some cardamom or a strong woody/leathery base? Or alternatively, a spicy/woody tuberose? December 2, 2023 at 5:54am Reply

    • Aurora: Hello: there is an orange blossom/leather I like very much although it is not talked about much, it’s Arquiste Infanta en flor, perhaps you might like to tryb, it is rather quiet in term of projection but it lasts well. December 2, 2023 at 12:19pm Reply

    • la_ninon: Cuir Cannage is another extraordinary orange blossom/leather. December 9, 2023 at 11:51pm Reply

    • Klaas: Not orange blossom per se, but Andy Tauers Orange Star is a definite winter winner! It’s a very beautiful blend of candied orange and white florals on a warm amber base with a hint of vanilla. Super uplifting and warming. Not easy to find in stores, but he offers a sample set on his website.

Good luck! December 11, 2023 at 10:57am Reply

broad category I know but 99% of the fragrances I own are winter/autumn and I need something for summer in Australia. Tried Bleu de Chanel and is just so bland. I have Pour Un Homme De Caron L’eau which I like and use but need something else. I’m open,

    • Alityke: What about traditional Eau de Colognes? The classic high end would be Chanel Exclusifs EdC. Turin & Sanchez cite it as the perfect EdC.
My favourite is Alvarez Gomez Agua di Colonia Concentrada. Like the best refreshing lemonade & so cheap it can be topped up regularly. Under those lemons lie a garden of woody herbs.
Acqua di Palma have a huge range of colognes, or try their blue bottle fragrances. Their fragrances always smell classy & debonair on a man & a little subversive on a woman.
All the above may be classics but none are bland.

  • Klaas: Much less expensive then the Chanel Exclusive would be any of the delicious Hermes Colognes. They go from bittersweet (Eau d’Orange Verte) to crisp and fruity (Rhubarbe Écarlate) to herbal/green (Eau de Gentiane Blanche). They have one for every taste!

And once you’re at the Hermes counter, you might as well sample Eau d’Hermès, an absolute summer favorite of mine.

Or try and put your nose on two absolute masculine classics: Guerlain Habit Rouge or Vétiver. Both perfect for summer, the first fresh/spicy, the other green, clean and peppery.

  • Jane Trewhella: I love Penhaligton’s Zizonia. It’s no longer available, so I wondered if anyone else was familiar with it, and if they’d found an alternative. Note: not an alternative, and it took me about two years to find a new perfume I liked, but I now wear Guerlain’s Néroli Outrenoir. They have bergamot and orange in common, it seems.
