Rachel: I am a also looking for a day time perfume also to wear in Florida wear it is quite warm. I love big orientals and chypre in the evening but looking for something much lighter not too sweet but with some character for the day. Old Herbaceous: I’m a fan of Atelier des Ors’ White Collection, especially Nuda Veritas and Choeur des Anges, which both have lovely citrus openings. I also love Hermes’ Un Jardin Sur Le Nil, which has grapefruit and green mango in the top notes. None of these are what I consider sweet. January 25, 2021 at 7:06pm

I really like Passage d’Enfer, also by L’aP, perfumer Olivia Giacobbetti. It’s a lovely light lily-incense blend. It’s much less powdery than MPM and I find it cooler, so it works well for the transition from winter to spring. January 28, 2021 at 6:16am

About 15 years ago, I bought a perfume oil named Perfect Musk from The Perfect Potion (now just “Perfect Potion”) in Brisbane. I adored the scent, which reminded me of my favourite red and violet jelly-beans with musk added. I liked it so much that I bought both the little 5ml bottle with the printed label on it, and, when it was – inexplicably – discontinued, the last 50ml bottle with the hand-written label.
Recently, it occurred to me that Perfect Musk might be similar to Lipstick Rose, so today I compared the two. I applied one on each arm – both crook and wrist. I’m happy to report that they are similar, but, for me, Perfect Musk wins – just! (I blame my sweet tooth, which is manifest in both my food and perfume preferences…) That is great, because I have the equivalent of 50ml of perfume extrait in reserve. Given the amount of perfume I own, that constitutes a lifetime supply. Furthermore, I can dilute portions of it with perfumer’s alcohol. I find that it’s not cloying, even in summer.
Both perfumes are very long-lasting. It is now about 10 hours since I applied them, and I can still smell each one in the crooks of my arms. I shall wear my slightly over-the-top Perfect Musk at home, and the more refined Lipstick Rose when I go out. January 25, 2021 at 10:02am
Merlynn: I love a number of rose cross violet lipstick scents and have a travel refill of Lipstick Rose. However, while I adore the opening I find it becomes far too dry on me over time and this makes it slightly annoying – consequently it doesn’t get much wear. So do I! I have only a couple of Guerlain lipsticks, and I love the violet scent. Also, Cyclax lipsticks and powders used to smell of violet and vanilla to me.
It’s a shame that Lipstick Rose becomes too dry on you, but at least you didn’t buy the 100ml bottle! Layering it with Lipstick On would certainly be worth a try.
Somehow, Lipstick On passed me by. I’d never heard of it, and have just enjoyed reading through the information and many of the comments about it on Basenotes and Fragrantica. Many people like it, some don’t, most say it lasts only a very short time, and a couple say it lasts for ages. I must try it sometime. Nina Z: Do you like Shalimar? A lot of people I know–and I see why they say it–compare it to Shalimar, though they say the base is different. I did try this and found it had a very harsh note on me (the birch tar?), which surprised me because usually Chanel perfumes work well for me both taste wise and on my skin. But then also I’m not a lover of Shalimar. This may be a minority opinion. Some people I know love it. January 25, 2021 at 3:54pm
Julie: Thank you for your reply. I have tried Shalimar a few times. I like it but I don’t own a bottle. I watched a review and he mentioned amber and powder, his first impression, and was very positive about the scent. Chanel usually works for me too. The reviewer also mentioned a nod to Shalimar and a few other twists and details explaining his take on this new oriental fragrance.

Silvermoon: Hello Julie, yes I was also curious about this. It sounds like I would enjoy it, but comments elsewhere have noted that one should test it before deciding given it’s quite strong and has some negative reactions. The problem is that with full lockdown in the UK, there is absolutely no place to test it. Also I am not sure how to get a small tester sample (the Chanel site doesn’t offer it). I decided to buy it. My 60th birthday is this Friday. The opening is very bold. It has an unmistakable profile in my opinion. I think it is perfect for the wintery temperatures here in New England. A beautiful tapestry of rich amber. I wore it to work yesterday…
Animalistic resin notes apparent as well as earthy patchouli and creamy sandalwood. I noticed a subtle whiff of Shalimar but not enough that it would be a great likeness on my skin. I would say Shalimar is pretty grand and more complex. I also think vanilla is the main thread of Shalimar in all its variations.
I didn’t notice that with Le Lion. I would call it elegant and plush. The carefully placed art that Chanel uses on the website with their description of this perfume is stunning. Thanks to Olivier Polge I am loving it! Have a great day. 🙂 February 10, 2021 at 10:44am

Well, the month started with my dad getting a sniff of my sample of Drakon by Carner and wanting a FB immediately. Since that means i can now steal it from him, i had no problem getting it for his bday.
Then the lovely folks from Bloom Perfume threw in a sample of Beso Pasion by Beso Beach.
It was the salty fig perfume I didnt know I needed. I compared it to Bois Naufrage, but it is a lot more potent and lemony, the vetiver and citrus a lot more pronounced, which I think I like a lot better. It’s what I hoped Figue Amere would be like, except FA was a lot mustier on me than I wanted.
Fb is only 100ml. Going back and forth on whether to get it or just buy another sample. I seem to have a thing for salty perfumes but there is salt and then there is SALT. Beso Pasion is a softer kind of salt (not on the level of Every Storm a Serenade) but somehow it’s more up my street than any fig/salt combo I’ve tried yet.
I hope this made any sense. I’ll take any recs for salary fig perfumes that come in smaller decants though. 100ml is a lot. January 25, 2021 at 12:10pm

Have you considered Bloom’s Nose Club? I’ve been using it for 3 years now and love it. The format changed recently and you buy tokens that can then be used to buy 10ml decants of anything they stock. Not only are you able to get your hands on 10ml instead of full bottles but the price per ml is also often far less compared to FB. On Black Friday they offered 25% tokens free, making it even more if a bargain! I love Drakon too and also recently got 10ml of Felino which is equally gorgeous. Mela: If you like Rive Gauche I think you may like Calandre by Paco Rabanne. I wore it a lot in the 90s. I have a bottle currently, but have not worn it a lot recently. My dad bought me a huge bottle of it when I was in college—too young and too poor to afford to buy much perfume on my own. limegreen: Diptyque Essences Insensee 2014 is discontinued but can be found on discount sites, eBay, etc. It’s worth testing as it is my favorite mimosa, with a depth of the gorgeous blossoms and a touch of green which makes balances the powdery effect. The bulb spray drives me nuts but is very elegant! (Diptyque comes out with these limited editions that feature different notes which is why the year is important.)
I second the recommendation for the Frederic Malle Fleur de Cassie though this is definitely not a blind buy as it is not soft mimosa. The opening can smell like a paper mill. 🙂 January 26, 2021 at 10:33am
Elaine: Ugo, the aldehydes I’ve adored for 31 years are in Chanel’s Cristalle EdT, still easily available (~$100 for a large bottle) on the Chanel website or at major department stores like Nordy’s, Bloomie’s, or Sak’s (RIP, Lord & Taylor…). I have ~70 bottles of perfume, but I consistently turn to Cristalle EdT for an amazingly lovely, distinctive pick-me-up. Every time I put it on, I feel like I’m in my late 20’s again. I know it’s not exactly the same formulation as the one from the late 80’s, but it’s really still very, very good, which is a mini-miracle. (Make sure to get the eau de Toilette, which is significantly different from the eau de Parfum). January 27, 2021 at 12:04am
Jenni: I too love Cristalle EDT and have worn it since the early 80s. It’s so uplifting, calming and reassuring and one to turn to for “difficult” days. Since it’s been discontinued, sadly it’s hard to find now in the UK. I have the EDP, a different fragrance as you note, but still prefer the EDT. My understanding is that Cristalle EDT is still an excellent seller for them and they’d be crazy to discontinue it, especially since no one complains about reformulations on it. I’d love to share your hope that the position in the UK is a temporary hiccup and I’d like to make it clear that my comment referred solely to my experience in the UK. However, when I’ve asked at Chanel counters here in the last couple of years, I’ve been told repeatedly that Cristalle EDT was not available and, to the best of their knowledge, would not be available in the UK for the foreseeable future, as “it does not have a following.” I may have been wrong in my interpretation that this was “discontinuation” for the UK market and if so, I apologise, but the net effect has been a lack of availability.
The EDT reminds me of the almost icy chill of an early spring morning when the air is fresh, bright, still and clear and the green shoots of the first flowers of the year are coming through, a sign of hope and renewal. I find the EDP softer and warmer but less distinctive.

I have been on a journey of figuring out specific scents I’m attracted to. Mimosa is one, although to my knowledge I have never known it to be expressed in perfume! Being in the states we are quiet limited to the perfumes available to us.
Two other scents I’m looking for guidance on is one I acquired in an oil form from Santa Maria Novella called Gaggia, other than the coffee espresso makers I can not find anything on it.
But I adore it. Calendula is another scent I love.
Would very much appreciate any information or thoughts you have on these.

I’d love to recommend a perfume by Serge Lutens named Le participe passé, which apparently indicates something that has been accomplished or existed in the past. This peculiar name works well for me: The scent reminds me of childhood days spent with my grandmother, of the coffee drops she loved and the licorice and other sweets she kept for me, of rooms with dark furniture brought to life by the sunlight falling in from the garden. I’m especially fond of mimosa/acacia because it is native to where I grew up (California) and on the hill behind my childhood home was a large acacia tree that I used to sit under when I wanted to be alone, to write under my journal or just daydream. It’s also where I had my first kiss. So today I’m wearing a bit of vintage-ish Farnesiana in honor of your photo and of the hope that comes with spring.
My most amazing acacia experience was more recent when I happened to visit the UC Davis Botanical Gardens in March a few years ago. They have an entire Acacia Grove there, which borders both sides of a creek, with all the different acacia trees and all were in full bloom on a sunny afternoon day when I was able to linger for as long as I wished. What a coincidence. Yesterday I was looking in my dresser for some perfumes I hadn’t used in a long time. My eye fell on L’Occitane Fleur d’Or & Acacia. It is a very warm accord of mimosa absolute from Grasse and Mediterranean acacia. L’Occitane has discontinued it, but maybe you can still find it on ebay if you are interested in. Rakasa: Call the store owner (or customer service) and ask that they give you the perfume batch numbers off of their in stock items. If you’ve already purchased the scent, check for the batch number (a short set of numbers and letters) usually found on the bottom or back of a box and/or bottle. Then visit checkfresh.com. Select the cosmetic brand link (no worries, Balmain and most all other perfume brands are included in the pull down list) and then enter the batch number of your product. January 26, 2021 at 1:55pm

I just counted seven full 50ml bottles of So Pretty on eBay, in case you’re interested in any of those.
Also, further to your hunt for Nuit de Noël, on eBay there is currently a seller offering six 2ml sample vials of “pure perfume”, which I assume means the extrait. There is another offering a 28ml bottle of the extrait for US $341.00. The listing says that it is in a sealed box, but there are several photos of the bottle.
I know I did a “blind buy” of a full bottle, so I can’t really talk, but I’d recommend you buy one of those sample vials! January 26, 2021 at 11:18am

I can’t recall how I gained the impression that Black was discontinued, but it might have been a sales assistant telling me so. Perhaps she meant that the store would no longer stock it. I’ve heard that one before – about Yardley’s April Violets, and not only is it still in production, but that pharmacy still sells it! Of course, it might well have been a sales strategy…
I’m glad you liked my recommendation, and when you’ve had a chance to try it, I’ll be very interested to hear your thoughts on it. I must try it as well.

Mela: I expressed that I was looking for some new perfume in the last recommend me thread. Many of you responded with great ideas and I confess to ordering samples of most of them…. plus extras along the way. I have been testing one, sometimes two, occasionally more than two new perfumes daily. I have narrowed down to five favorites so far. In no particular order, they are:

I have the two Malle fragrances Carnal Flower and Portrait of a Lady from your list. They are so different. Portrait feels very formal to me, I feel the need to sit straighter in it. Beautiful fragrance, but for me its presence demands a certain elegance (in dress, in surroundings and in manners). Carnal Flower is beautiful too, but in a more unbridled, maybe even slightly vulgar way. While it is not an all-occasion fragrance -it is quite loud – I find it more flexible. I do wear it with jeans as well as a dress or pajamas (I love wearing it to sleep). Its presence counts as a piece of accessory almost, I feel the need to keep the rest simple: the gorgeous aura of Carnal Flower does the talking.
On a technical level, both fragrances are a-little-goes-a-very-long-way and very economical. I started with the 3.5 ml bottles (tiny) that came in a little set and they have lasted surprisingly long. I can hardly imagine finishing a 50 or 100 ml bottle.

Karen’s suggestion sounds very reasonable! Frederic Malle’s are quite costly, and for the price of 100 ml. of Carnal Flower you could get 100 ml. of the Lutens + a 10 ml. of the 2 Malle’s. That’s 3 out of 5!
To make things even more enticing…..Baccarat Rouge also comes as a hair mist and body oil……much more affordable then the actual perfume. If you throw in one of those to top it off that will make 4……….

Well, how about what I love to do — the 10 ml travel sprays of the Malle POAL and Carnal Flower, as well as the Lutens? POAL will last a long time in that 10 ml size. Not for something like En Passant though! Malle now has 30 ml sizes which is really nice.

And En Passant, the best lilac fragrance!! The Nat’l Arboretum has an incredible lilac grove. It used to be a bit overgrown and had a wild feel to it. I am enjoying Mon Guerlain, the EDT only, on rainy days. As simple as it is, I find it cozy, comforting, and well-made. I am curious what others think of it. It has been discontinued, but is very inexpensive online right now.
I also adore Goutal’s Vanille Exquise for cold weather, I forget how good it is. Truly exquisite!

limegreen: I wanted to check in with you about bergamot from your Atelier Bergamot Soleil comment. I love the opening of it but decided against it in the end, the juniper drydown wasn’t working for my skin. My favorite Bergamot is Le Labo Bergamot 22. I recently came across a much more affordable bergamot, Essential Parfums Nice Bergamot. It’s kind of fleeting (about the same as Le Labo) but quite wonderful, and more natural cologne than perfume. Karen A: Some ideas to think about, I’ve got PoaL, La Fille and CF. I’d say it depends on how you think you’ll be wearing them – La Fille is my go to rose, and it’s one that I get compliments on. PoaL is a powerhouse and I’d say can be too much in hot or humid weather, at least for me.
CF is gorgeous and wears well in all seasons. Maybe get a 10ml of it and a bottle of La Fille? Those are tbe three from your list that I know.

They sell top brands at big discounts (end of series, bottles without a box, slightly damaged bottles). There’s quite a few Frederic Malle’s this time: Une Fleur de Cassie, Le Parfum de Therese, Dans tes Bras, En Passant……Also a Carnal Flower oil. They go almost half price. Also some Penhaligon, Creed, Le Labo, Heeley….
You can see the items on sale only if you register on their website. It is free and takes a few seconds. Then hit the Archives-link.

There sure are a lot of tulips here, and we are quite fond of them. They come in all kind of colors and sizes, from the humble red tulip to the big baroque ones with the flamed leaves.

limegreen: If you love CF, you will love the oil!
The Malle body products are high in quality and really are in the fragrance in another format. Unlike some other lines where the fragrance is diluted or just lotion/oil with some scent that fades quickly.
Carnal Flower body butter is divine and when they released the oil, I had used up my jar of body butter so it was great timing. The body and hair oil absorbs nicely into the skin, and after putting it on my wrists and hands, elbows etc. I run my hands through my hair to lightly scent the hair. The oil seems “greener” than the fragrance (fresher?) but it is the same, just a lighter less indolic way to wear CF. I find it softer, which is friendlier in work environments, when one will be with people in close proximity again! In fact, I like putting some on at bedtime!
(I wear Une Rose and Dans Tes Bras body butter, too, though the latter has been discontinued.) January 30, 2021 at 10:14am

Merlin: Last year I bought a bottle of Mimosa Pour Moi for my birthday but am beginning to realise I am a little allergic to it. My eyes water a bit and my nose gets itchy when I wear it. Clearly I should have tested it a few more times before purchasing! Does anyone else have such difficulties with their beloveds? For example, I have/enjoyed Coco Mademoiselle, Balenciaga Paris, Le Labo Iris 39 (which my partner told me smelled like “10 old people chatting in a funeral home”), and, most recently, Chanel L’eau Venise. I thought I loved violet/iris because of the Balenciaga and Le Labo, but I got samples of Guerlain L’Heure Bleu, Serge Lutens Silver Mist, & FM Dans tes Bras aaaand I did not. Après l’ondée was nice, but more of an event perfume for me. I want to smell like a very rich lady who everyone thinks is just naturally clean and rich and smells great because her soul is clean and kind. That is probably no help. Good luck. I could put my tongue firmly in my cheek and suggest White Diamonds (Elizabeth Taylor 1991), but it’s actually not too bad.
More seriously, you could try White Linen (Estée Lauder 1978).
According to the great Michael Edwards’ fragrance classification system, both these scents are floral aldehydes of a crisp nature, with white flower notes.
You could also try Pleasures (Estée Lauder 1995), which is a floral of a fresh nature with green notes.
As you are a relative newcomer to perfume, I strongly suggest that, if you haven’t already done so, you do yourself a favour and buy a copy of “Perfumes: The A – Z Guide” by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez – the updated 2009 edition. Then buy
“Perfumes: The Guide” from 2018, which covers the decade since the previous book and reviews over 1,200 new fragrances. Not only are these books informative, they are highly entertaining!
If you already have the first book, look up the three fragrances I’ve mentioned. Both White Linen and Pleasures receive five stars and White Diamonds receives three. Look them up here on Bois de Jasmin as well.

I second White Linen, but if you want rich, elegant and clean, there really is no brand like Chanel. Nr. 19 (has iris!!), Cristalle (so gorgeous!!) or Nr. 5 (or its beautiful modern flanker Eau Premiere). If you can spend a bit more money maybe try Rue Cambon, Bel Respiro, Nr. 22 (but only if you like aldehydes!), Boy or even 1932.
Or crisp, clean and elegant Chanel pour Monsieur??
And since we are gender bending…….do you like vetiver? clean and chic all the way 😉 Guerlain Vetiver is a must try, and Chanel has Sycamore! Tom Ford Grey Vetiver is also easy to sample.

This past Christmas I stayed home, due to pandemic precautions, and the memory of this tea that the family has enjoyed together has haunted me these past two months. It is flavored with white grape, and it smells fruity and leafy and so, so warm. I am absolutely jonzin’ for something like that scent memory…dry pale grapes and tea that is bright and vegetal.
