Recommend Me a Perfume : January 2021

Our first “Recommend Me a Perfume” thread of 2021 is open this week. You can use this space to find perfume recommendations, to share your discoveries and favorite scents, and to ask any questions about scents, aromas and flavors. Or you can just tell us what perfume you are wearing!

How does it work: 1. Please post your requests or questions as comments here. You can also use this space to ask any fragrance related questions. To receive recommendations that are better tailored to your tastes, you can include details on what you like and don’t like, your signature perfumes, and your budget. And please let us know what you end up sampling. 2. Then please check the thread to see if there are other requests you can answer. Your responses are really valuable for navigating the big and sometimes confusing world of perfume, so let’s help each other!

  • Kat Sawtelle: Hello, Victoria!

Your photo reminds me that in a few weeks, I’ll start wearing Mimosa Pour Moi by L’Artisan Parfumeur to get me through Feb/March in the NE USA.

What would you recommend for day wear for the 6 weeks between the mysteries of the holidays and mimosa season?

    Thanks,

    • Rachel: I am a also looking for a day time perfume also to wear in Florida wear it is quite warm. I love big orientals and chypre in the evening but looking for something much lighter not too sweet but with some character for the day. I have a hard time finding a citrus with some softness and beauty. I would love some suggestions. Thank you! January 25, 2021 at 10:01am Reply

      • Old Herbaceous: I’m a fan of Atelier des Ors’ White Collection, especially Nuda Veritas and Choeur des Anges, which both have lovely citrus openings. I also love Hermes’ Un Jardin Sur Le Nil, which has grapefruit and green mango in the top notes. None of these are what I consider sweet. January 25, 2021 at 7:06pm Reply

      • Aurora: Maybe some citrus from Diptyque: Oyedo is very unique. January 26, 2021 at 12:54pm Reply

    • Aurora: Hello Kat: do you like violet? In February I like to wear Serge Lutens Bois de Violette. January 26, 2021 at 12:36pm Reply

      • kat sawtelle: thank you, Aurora! sounds lovely January 26, 2021 at 4:22pm Reply

      • kat sawtelle: Aurora, my sample of Bois de Violette arrived today! Wonderful! I love the dry cedar in this cold weather, completely evocative of a Finnish sauna. Thank you January 29, 2021 at 6:10pm Reply

        • Aurora: Hello Kat: I am so glad BdV is a winner for you too! Thank you for letting me know! I think it’s one of the best by Serge Lutens. Your description is spot on. January 30, 2021 at 5:26am Reply

    • Charlotte: Hi Kat, what is it you like about Mimosa Pour Moi, but that you’re not quite ready for? Is it because it feels like a spring floral?

I really like Passage d’Enfer, also by L’aP, perfumer Olivia Giacobbetti. It’s a lovely light lily-incense blend. It’s much less powdery than MPM and I find it cooler, so it works well for the transition from winter to spring. January 28, 2021 at 6:16am Reply

      • Kat Sawtelle: Hi, Charlotte! thank you for the question–I’m not ready to say good-by to winter yet…I loved Diptyque’s L’eau trois as an everyday wear for the holidays, but it seems too resinous now that the light has changed. I will try Passage d’Enfer (I’ve liked her other works), also Cristalle and (which I wore when much younger and had forgotten about) January 28, 2021 at 7:39am Reply

        • Charlotte: Ooh yes Cristalle is great, and I think has a similar chilliness that isn’t exactly cold, if that makes sense! That plus the earthiness (spring just beginning to stir) should be perfect for this period 🙂 January 28, 2021 at 7:56am Reply

  • Himali: I love the scent Jo Malone Oud and Bergamot but the sillage is terrible. Any recommendations for a similar scent with better longevity? January 25, 2021 at 9:33am Reply

    • Aurora: Hi Himali, There was Jo Malone Oud et Bergamot rich extrait released so you might want to look for that as the longevity would be better. January 26, 2021 at 1:03pm Reply

  • Tourmaline: Hello Perfume Lovers,

About 15 years ago, I bought a perfume oil named Perfect Musk from The Perfect Potion (now just “Perfect Potion”) in Brisbane. I adored the scent, which reminded me of my favourite red and violet jelly-beans with musk added. I liked it so much that I bought both the little 5ml bottle with the printed label on it, and, when it was – inexplicably – discontinued, the last 50ml bottle with the hand-written label.

Recently, it occurred to me that Perfect Musk might be similar to Lipstick Rose, so today I compared the two. I applied one on each arm – both crook and wrist. I’m happy to report that they are similar, but, for me, Perfect Musk wins – just! (I blame my sweet tooth, which is manifest in both my food and perfume preferences…) That is great, because I have the equivalent of 50ml of perfume extrait in reserve. Given the amount of perfume I own, that constitutes a lifetime supply. Furthermore, I can dilute portions of it with perfumer’s alcohol. I find that it’s not cloying, even in summer.

Both perfumes are very long-lasting. It is now about 10 hours since I applied them, and I can still smell each one in the crooks of my arms. I shall wear my slightly over-the-top Perfect Musk at home, and the more refined Lipstick Rose when I go out. January 25, 2021 at 10:02am Reply

    • Merlynn: I love a number of rose cross violet lipstick scents and have a travel refill of Lipstick Rose. However, while I adore the opening I find it becomes far too dry on me over time and this makes it slightly annoying – consequently it doesn’t get much wear. Perhaps I should layer it with Margiela’s Lipstick On… January 30, 2021 at 10:14am Reply

      • Tourmaline: Hi Merlynn,

So do I! I have only a couple of Guerlain lipsticks, and I love the violet scent. Also, Cyclax lipsticks and powders used to smell of violet and vanilla to me.

It’s a shame that Lipstick Rose becomes too dry on you, but at least you didn’t buy the 100ml bottle! Layering it with Lipstick On would certainly be worth a try.

Somehow, Lipstick On passed me by. I’d never heard of it, and have just enjoyed reading through the information and many of the comments about it on Basenotes and Fragrantica. Many people like it, some don’t, most say it lasts only a very short time, and a couple say it lasts for ages. I must try it sometime. In the meantime, I’d be interested to hear your thoughts about it. January 31, 2021 at 9:06am Reply

  • Julie: Hello Perfume Lovers,
I have been wearing Tempo and Fille en Aiguilles quite a bit. Not sure about today yet. Possibly Cuir Ottoman?
I noticed a new release last year that caught my attention…
I am curious if anyone has tried LE LION de CHANEL and if so are you enjoying it? It sounds like a well-made perfume.
Please let me know if you recommend this one. Thanking all of you in advance who are enjoying this scent! Have a great day. January 25, 2021 at 11:35am Reply

    • Nina Z: Do you like Shalimar? A lot of people I know–and I see why they say it–compare it to Shalimar, though they say the base is different. I did try this and found it had a very harsh note on me (the birch tar?), which surprised me because usually Chanel perfumes work well for me both taste wise and on my skin. But then also I’m not a lover of Shalimar. This may be a minority opinion. Some people I know love it. January 25, 2021 at 3:54pm Reply

      • Julie: Thank you for your reply. I have tried Shalimar a few times. I like it but I don’t own a bottle. I watched a review and he mentioned amber and powder, his first impression, and was very positive about the scent. Chanel usually works for me too. The reviewer also mentioned a nod to Shalimar and a few other twists and details explaining his take on this new oriental fragrance.
Thanks again Nina, I just may have to try this one. January 26, 2021 at 9:43am Reply

    • Karina: For me it is similar enough for me not to want both and I already own Shalimar. January 27, 2021 at 2:04am Reply

    • Silvermoon: Hello Julie, yes I was also curious about this. It sounds like I would enjoy it, but comments elsewhere have noted that one should test it before deciding given it’s quite strong and has some negative reactions. The problem is that with full lockdown in the UK, there is absolutely no place to test it. Also I am not sure how to get a small tester sample (the Chanel site doesn’t offer it). Brexit makes ordering from EU based sample selling sites impossible. January 31, 2021 at 1:00pm Reply

      • Julie: Hello Silvermoon,
        Tough times indeed.
I noticed a seller on eBay with samples if you’re interested. Here’s the item number
        373435728864 & also the name is parfumaniac_nr1.
        Worldwide shipping!
Good luck to you. Looks like it may be an option. January 31, 2021 at 9:39pm Reply

        • Silvermoon: Thanks, Julie. I shall take a look. Have you had a chance to test it? February 3, 2021 at 2:40pm Reply

          • Julie: Hi Silvermoon,
I decided to buy it. My 60th birthday is this Friday. The opening is very bold. It has an unmistakable profile in my opinion. I think it is perfect for the wintery temperatures here in New England. A beautiful tapestry of rich amber. I wore it to work yesterday…
Animalistic resin notes apparent as well as earthy patchouli and creamy sandalwood. I noticed a subtle whiff of Shalimar but not enough that it would be a great likeness on my skin. I would say Shalimar is pretty grand and more complex. I also think vanilla is the main thread of Shalimar in all its variations.
I didn’t notice that with Le Lion. I would call it elegant and plush. The carefully placed art that Chanel uses on the website with their description of this perfume is stunning. Thanks to Olivier Polge I am loving it! Have a great day. 🙂 February 10, 2021 at 10:44am Reply

            • Silvermoon: Hello Julie, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY 🥳
Oh, a 60th sounds like it needs Le Lion! And your description makes it sound lovely/tempting. Now, my birthday is in October so not sure whether I should wait that long? My 60th still years away…

The marketing has been very clever, but I am good at ignoring that. It’s the description (by those who have tried it) that is fascinating and drawing me in.

Enjoy your birthday weekend! Wishing you all the best and much health in the year ahead. February 10, 2021 at 2:58pm Reply

              • Julie: Thank you for the uplifting wish Sivermoon. I appreciate your kind words…
Please let me know what you think if you decide to try it. I have always enjoyed oriental perfumes.
The lion is very symbolic in the marketing for this new perfume.
I think we could all use more strength & courage.
Wishing you all the best! February 11, 2021 at 12:15pm Reply

  • Katya: Hello,

Well, the month started with my dad getting a sniff of my sample of Drakon by Carner and wanting a FB immediately. Since that means i can now steal it from him, i had no problem getting it for his bday.

Then the lovely folks from Bloom Perfume threw in a sample of Beso Pasion by Beso Beach.

It was the salty fig perfume I didnt know I needed. I compared it to Bois Naufrage, but it is a lot more potent and lemony, the vetiver and citrus a lot more pronounced, which I think I like a lot better. It’s what I hoped Figue Amere would be like, except FA was a lot mustier on me than I wanted.

Fb is only 100ml. Going back and forth on whether to get it or just buy another sample. I seem to have a thing for salty perfumes but there is salt and then there is SALT. Beso Pasion is a softer kind of salt (not on the level of Every Storm a Serenade) but somehow it’s more up my street than any fig/salt combo I’ve tried yet.

I hope this made any sense. I’ll take any recs for salary fig perfumes that come in smaller decants though. 100ml is a lot. January 25, 2021 at 12:10pm Reply

    • Aurora: Hi Katya: Have you tried TM Womanity? It is polarizing but it’s definitely salt and fig. January 26, 2021 at 1:06pm Reply

    • Ben: Hi Katya

Have you considered Bloom’s Nose Club? I’ve been using it for 3 years now and love it. The format changed recently and you buy tokens that can then be used to buy 10ml decants of anything they stock. Not only are you able to get your hands on 10ml instead of full bottles but the price per ml is also often far less compared to FB. On Black Friday they offered 25% tokens free, making it even more if a bargain! I love Drakon too and also recently got 10ml of Felino which is equally gorgeous. And Beso Passion is on my list to sample once the shop is open again 😃 January 27, 2021 at 8:18am Reply

  • Ugo: Hello I would like some recommendation about an aldehydic perfume (I already have Chanel 5, Rive Gauche, Caleche and White Linen) and also a good mimosa fragrance (I already know Farnesiana, La Belle Saison, Mimosa Tanneron and the one by Fragonard). Thank you January 25, 2021 at 1:25pm Reply

    • Nina Z: Chanel No 22 for aldehydes. Frederic Malle Fleur de Cassie for mimosa (acacia/cassie is another name for mimosa). January 25, 2021 at 3:38pm Reply

    • Old Herbaceous: Yes, Chanel No. 22 for aldehydes! It’s one of my favorite scents. American perfumer Jeffrey Dame makes a very nice mimosa, called Mimosa Mixte. January 25, 2021 at 7:09pm Reply

      • Cornelia Blimber: Sad news: No.22 is discontinued. January 26, 2021 at 9:07am Reply

        • Nina Z: What? How sad! Still, there are ways to obtain it before it is totally gone. And it’s actually pretty easy to find vintage Chanel 22 because there was so much of it back in the day. January 26, 2021 at 2:56pm Reply

        • OnWingsofSaffron: What????? January 29, 2021 at 5:14pm Reply

          • OnWingsofSaffron: No, still available in Germany, at lesst at this moment. January 29, 2021 at 5:16pm Reply

            • Cornelia Blimber: By it before it is too late! February 3, 2021 at 11:21am Reply

    • Mela: If you like Rive Gauche I think you may like Calandre by Paco Rabanne. I wore it a lot in the 90s. I have a bottle currently, but have not worn it a lot recently. My dad bought me a huge bottle of it when I was in college—too young and too poor to afford to buy much perfume on my own. I used to douse myself in it before my side job as a cocktail waitress in a night club. It always got plenty of compliments and tips when I wore it. January 25, 2021 at 9:39pm Reply

    • Katya: I’m partial to Mimosa and Cardamom by Jo Malone. Unusually good lasting power on me, but I would find a tester first. January 26, 2021 at 3:56am Reply

      • sandra: Ditto on this one.
Not sure if its still around but a mimosa/fruity would be Mimosa by Annick Goutal January 27, 2021 at 9:21am Reply

    • limegreen: Diptyque Essences Insensee 2014 is discontinued but can be found on discount sites, eBay, etc. It’s worth testing as it is my favorite mimosa, with a depth of the gorgeous blossoms and a touch of green which makes balances the powdery effect. The bulb spray drives me nuts but is very elegant! (Diptyque comes out with these limited editions that feature different notes which is why the year is important.)
I second the recommendation for the Frederic Malle Fleur de Cassie though this is definitely not a blind buy as it is not soft mimosa. The opening can smell like a paper mill. 🙂 January 26, 2021 at 10:33am Reply

    • Elaine: Ugo, the aldehydes I’ve adored for 31 years are in Chanel’s Cristalle EdT, still easily available (~$100 for a large bottle) on the Chanel website or at major department stores like Nordy’s, Bloomie’s, or Sak’s (RIP, Lord & Taylor…). I have ~70 bottles of perfume, but I consistently turn to Cristalle EdT for an amazingly lovely, distinctive pick-me-up. Every time I put it on, I feel like I’m in my late 20’s again. I know it’s not exactly the same formulation as the one from the late 80’s, but it’s really still very, very good, which is a mini-miracle. (Make sure to get the eau de Toilette, which is significantly different from the eau de Parfum). January 27, 2021 at 12:04am Reply

      • Jenni: I too love Cristalle EDT and have worn it since the early 80s. It’s so uplifting, calming and reassuring and one to turn to for “difficult” days. Since it’s been discontinued, sadly it’s hard to find now in the UK. I have the EDP, a different fragrance as you note, but still prefer the EDT. Maybe when we can travel again, I’ll be able to find another bottle! January 29, 2021 at 6:24am Reply

        • Elaine: Hi Jenni, one can still get Cristalle EdT on chanel.com. I’d been meaning to get a BUB for a while now, since I’m going through my current bottle pretty fast, and you just scared me into finally ordering it! It’s on a 20-days backorder, at least here in the States. Just the thought of Cristalle ever being discontinued gives me a perfumista shudder! 😮😟 January 29, 2021 at 12:42pm Reply

          • Jenni: Hi Elaine, thank you for replying. I’m sorry if my comment has upset or worried you – that’s certainly not what I would have wanted. As far as I can see, on chanel.com the EDT is available to order from the US site but not from the UK site. It hasn’t been available for some time, nor have I been able to track it down in store in the UK. Probably time for some more experimentation with fragrances! January 29, 2021 at 2:40pm Reply

          • Elaine: No, honey you didn’t really scare me – I was being jokingly dramatic! But I did order my Cristalle back-up today & I’m grateful to you for that. The two words “Cristalle” & “discontinued” together shook me out of my procrastination, so thank you! I’m sorry that it’s not listed on the UK site. They may just be having a supply-chain hiccup and it will be posted again soon. My understanding is that Cristalle EDT is still an excellent seller for them and they’d be crazy to discontinue it, especially since no one complains about reformulations on it. If you can’t find it, drop me a line w/ your mailing address at ellebe (add “333”) at the land of gee-mail & I’ll make up a decant of Cristalle & mail it to you. 😀👍🏻 January 29, 2021 at 4:20pm Reply

            • Jenni: Hi Elaine, thank you very much for your kind and generous offer. At present I’m harbouring my current supply very carefully until we can travel again.

I’d love to share your hope that the position in the UK is a temporary hiccup and I’d like to make it clear that my comment referred solely to my experience in the UK. However, when I’ve asked at Chanel counters here in the last couple of years, I’ve been told repeatedly that Cristalle EDT was not available and, to the best of their knowledge, would not be available in the UK for the foreseeable future, as “it does not have a following.” I may have been wrong in my interpretation that this was “discontinuation” for the UK market and if so, I apologise, but the net effect has been a lack of availability.

The EDT reminds me of the almost icy chill of an early spring morning when the air is fresh, bright, still and clear and the green shoots of the first flowers of the year are coming through, a sign of hope and renewal. I find the EDP softer and warmer but less distinctive.

I really appreciate your offer, Elaine, and will get back to you if I’m unsuccessful in my search! January 30, 2021 at 4:20am Reply

              • Nikki: hello, I’ve never commented here before, but I was just reading through the thread and then shortly after looking for a good price on Chanel No 19, when I noticed that John Lewis has Cristalle EdT available online in the UK. It’s a few days since your comment and it may be you’ve found this out already, but just in case not I thought it was worth saying. February 10, 2021 at 6:58pm Reply

                • Jenni: Thank you Nikki. I’ve just checked and John Lewis have the Cristalle Eau Verte EdT available, which is a different fragrance. I appreciate your thoughtfulness in letting me know though! February 11, 2021 at 3:24am Reply

    • Charlotte: @Ugo, have you tried First by Van Cleef & Arpels? It’s a lovely early example of Jean-Claude Ellena’s work, feels quite retro. I especially notice the aldehydes, narcissus and sandalwood. Victoria gives it 5 stars! January 28, 2021 at 5:54am Reply

  • Wanda: How delighted I was to see mention of Mimosa !
I have been on a journey of figuring out specific scents I’m attracted to. Mimosa is one, although to my knowledge I have never known it to be expressed in perfume! Being in the states we are quiet limited to the perfumes available to us.
Two other scents I’m looking for guidance on is one I acquired in an oil form from Santa Maria Novella called Gaggia, other than the coffee espresso makers I can not find anything on it.
But I adore it. Calendula is another scent I love.
Would very much appreciate any information or thoughts you have on these.
Thank you January 25, 2021 at 1:47pm Reply

    • Brigitte: Wanda, Gaggìa is an old Italian name describing at least two different plants:
one is Acacia Farnesiana and the other one is Robinia Pseudacacia. But I have no idea to which plant SMN refer. February 3, 2021 at 3:38pm Reply

      • Wanda: Brigitte Thank you for that information. Very helpful. This will extend my research a long ways. February 3, 2021 at 5:45pm Reply

  • Kerstin: Dear Victoria,
I’d love to recommend a perfume by Serge Lutens named Le participe passé, which apparently indicates something that has been accomplished or existed in the past. This peculiar name works well for me: The scent reminds me of childhood days spent with my grandmother, of the coffee drops she loved and the licorice and other sweets she kept for me, of rooms with dark furniture brought to life by the sunlight falling in from the garden. For whichever reason the name was actually chosen, to me the scent is a calm and tender greeting from the past. January 25, 2021 at 3:22pm Reply

  • Nina Z: Victoria, that is an exquisite photo! I’m especially fond of mimosa/acacia because it is native to where I grew up (California) and on the hill behind my childhood home was a large acacia tree that I used to sit under when I wanted to be alone, to write under my journal or just daydream. It’s also where I had my first kiss. So today I’m wearing a bit of vintage-ish Farnesiana in honor of your photo and of the hope that comes with spring.

My most amazing acacia experience was more recent when I happened to visit the UC Davis Botanical Gardens in March a few years ago. They have an entire Acacia Grove there, which borders both sides of a creek, with all the different acacia trees and all were in full bloom on a sunny afternoon day when I was able to linger for as long as I wished. Never to be forgotten. January 25, 2021 at 3:45pm Reply

    • Hilde: Hi Nina,
What a coincidence. Yesterday I was looking in my dresser for some perfumes I hadn’t used in a long time. My eye fell on L’Occitane Fleur d’Or & Acacia. It is a very warm accord of mimosa absolute from Grasse and Mediterranean acacia. L’Occitane has discontinued it, but maybe you can still find it on ebay if you are interested in. January 26, 2021 at 4:50am Reply

      • Nina Z: That does sound interesting! I don’t blind buy bottles, but maybe I can track down a sample. Thanks! January 26, 2021 at 2:57pm Reply

      • Nancy Chan: L’Occitane’s Fleur d’Or & Acacia from their Grasse range, is a nice sweet mimosa. So sad they have discontinued the range. January 29, 2021 at 8:39am Reply

  • Domestic Goblin: I am still looking for a worthy replacement for Ivoire Balmain (2012 version) which is now discontinued. I loved the green opening and the addictive soapy floral notes that followed. Any suggestions would be welcome. January 26, 2021 at 3:37am Reply

    • Tourmaline: Hi Domestic Goblin,

I just counted 10 bottles of Ivoire on eBay, athough I don’t know whether any of them would be the 2012 version, or how you would tell. If you see packaging that you recognize, perhaps you could message the seller for any further details you would require. January 26, 2021 at 10:52am Reply

      • Rakasa: Call the store owner (or customer service) and ask that they give you the perfume batch numbers off of their in stock items. If you’ve already purchased the scent, check for the batch number (a short set of numbers and letters) usually found on the bottom or back of a box and/or bottle. Then visit checkfresh.com. Select the cosmetic brand link (no worries, Balmain and most all other perfume brands are included in the pull down list) and then enter the batch number of your product. • Tourmaline: Thanks, Rakasa.

That’s great information for Domestic Goblin, and for me for the future! January 29, 2021 at 10:26am Reply

    • Aurora: I second Tourmaline to keep an eye on eBay, here in the UK it is listed time to time at still reasonable prices. January 26, 2021 at 1:10pm Reply

I am looking for an alternative for Cartier So Pretty, which has been discontinued. Can someone give me an advice?
Thank you very much. January 26, 2021 at 4:26am Reply

    • Tourmaline: Hi Hilde,

I just counted seven full 50ml bottles of So Pretty on eBay, in case you’re interested in any of those.

Also, further to your hunt for Nuit de Noël, on eBay there is currently a seller offering six 2ml sample vials of “pure perfume”, which I assume means the extrait. There is another offering a 28ml bottle of the extrait for US $341.00. The listing says that it is in a sealed box, but there are several photos of the bottle.

I know I did a “blind buy” of a full bottle, so I can’t really talk, but I’d recommend you buy one of those sample vials! January 26, 2021 at 11:18am Reply

      • Hilde: Hello Tourmaline.
Many thanks for looking this up for me. I am going to try to find these offerings and I will let you know if I had a chance to buy one of those.

          P. S. I hope you saw my reply to your fabulous “perfume odyssey” comment in the Reflections on 2020 post.

Surely, I read your reply on my perfume odyssey and it is a pleasure to receive your comments. I also read your recommendation for Bulgari Black. I am eager to buy this perfume. You mentioned that it is discontinued, but I can find it on several perfume websites. I think it will not take very long time before I will offer one to myself. Keep you informed.
            Kind regards.

            • Tourmaline: Hi Hilde,

              Thank you!

I can’t recall how I gained the impression that Black was discontinued, but it might have been a sales assistant telling me so. Perhaps she meant that the store would no longer stock it. I’ve heard that one before – about Yardley’s April Violets, and not only is it still in production, but that pharmacy still sells it! Of course, it might well have been a sales strategy…

I’m glad you liked my recommendation, and when you’ve had a chance to try it, I’ll be very interested to hear your thoughts on it. I must try it as well.

              With kind regards,

  • Mela: I expressed that I was looking for some new perfume in the last recommend me thread. Many of you responded with great ideas and I confess to ordering samples of most of them…. plus extras along the way. I have been testing one, sometimes two, occasionally more than two new perfumes daily. I have narrowed down to five favorites so far. In no particular order, they are:

Portrait of a Lady by Frederic Malle
    Nuit Andalouse by MDCI
Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait by MFK
La Fille de Berlin by Serge Lutens
    Carnal Flower by Frederic Malle

I love them all. I should not buy them all. Anyone have any insight on any of these that might help inform my process of narrowing down to two? Help! January 26, 2021 at 5:21pm Reply

    • Irem: Hello Mela,
I have the two Malle fragrances Carnal Flower and Portrait of a Lady from your list. They are so different. Portrait feels very formal to me, I feel the need to sit straighter in it. Beautiful fragrance, but for me its presence demands a certain elegance (in dress, in surroundings and in manners). Carnal Flower is beautiful too, but in a more unbridled, maybe even slightly vulgar way. While it is not an all-occasion fragrance -it is quite loud – I find it more flexible. I do wear it with jeans as well as a dress or pajamas (I love wearing it to sleep). Its presence counts as a piece of accessory almost, I feel the need to keep the rest simple: the gorgeous aura of Carnal Flower does the talking.
On a technical level, both fragrances are a-little-goes-a-very-long-way and very economical. I started with the 3.5 ml bottles (tiny) that came in a little set and they have lasted surprisingly long. I can hardly imagine finishing a 50 or 100 ml bottle.
All my impressions of course, hope it helps. January 28, 2021 at 9:48am Reply

      • Mela: Thank you for the recommendation , Irem. I agree Carnal Flower sure does last. Last night I pulled out a hair tie I used when I wore it a few weeks ago and the thing still smells like CF!! Mind you, it’s not like I sprayed directly on the hair tie or in my hair even… January 28, 2021 at 11:46am Reply

    • Gabriela: Carnal Flower is a MUST in my opinion. Absolutely love it. I treasure my bottle and it lasts many years…
Irem, will defenitely try wearing it to sleep. January 28, 2021 at 11:00am Reply

      • Mela: Thanks for the insight, Gabriela! I finished my sample already so I can’t try it for bed, but if you do let us know how you liked it. I love to wear certain fragrances to bed…usually florals and lavender. I liked the (aptly named I guess) Nuit Andalouse for bed time. January 28, 2021 at 11:52am Reply

        • GABRIELA: Are you based in Europe or the USA? We could exchange samples if you are in Europe! January 28, 2021 at 12:20pm Reply

          • Mela: USA…🙁 January 28, 2021 at 12:26pm Reply

    • Klaas: Hello Mela, I don’t know ANY of the fragrances you mention (I hear you think……so why are you calling in?), but I know about being on a budget 😉

Karen’s suggestion sounds very reasonable! Frederic Malle’s are quite costly, and for the price of 100 ml. of Carnal Flower you could get 100 ml. of the Lutens + a 10 ml. of the 2 Malle’s. That’s 3 out of 5!

To make things even more enticing…..Baccarat Rouge also comes as a hair mist and body oil……much more affordable then the actual perfume. If you throw in one of those to top it off that will make 4……….

Greetings from Amsterdam! January 28, 2021 at 3:42pm Reply

    • Peter: Aloha Mela. It’s the ‘Lolo’ from Hawaii. I love both of the Malles. I also love Irem’s wonderful description. It perfectly encapsulates my own thoughts. January 28, 2021 at 11:26pm Reply

    • limegreen: I don’t know how you choose but these “loves” do change over time. Give it another few wearings over the next few months…..
Not helpful, right, when you want a FB now? 🙂
Well, how about what I love to do — the 10 ml travel sprays of the Malle POAL and Carnal Flower, as well as the Lutens? POAL will last a long time in that 10 ml size. Not for something like En Passant though! Malle now has 30 ml sizes which is really nice.
Good luck! January 29, 2021 at 12:31am Reply

      • Karen A: Ooops! Saw my comment posted to the wrong question. But yes, the 10ml option is really perfect!

And En Passant, the best lilac fragrance!! The Nat’l Arboretum has an incredible lilac grove. It used to be a bit overgrown and had a wild feel to it. Not many people stopped and picnic there so it’s the most perfect spot to go, when the lilacs are in full bloom with a picnic, book, and spend a few hours! January 29, 2021 at 8:54am Reply

        • limegreen: I wore En Passant the other day to elicit spring. It was an overcast day and just the fragrance for lifting my spirits. Your description of the lilac grove sounds heavenly! January 29, 2021 at 9:54am Reply

    • Domestic Goblin: Hi Mela,

I know this won’t help you narrow down to two, but if you’re looking for a more affordable alternative, apparently Cloud by Ariana Grande is a worthy dupe for Baccarat Rouge. January 29, 2021 at 3:04am Reply

  • Ava: Have you tried the Shalimar flanker Lumiere de Souffle, Victoria? I love the jasmine and ylang ylang in it. Such a beautiful bottle too. I just received it a few days ago and it has been a pleasantly surprising blind buy.

I am enjoying Mon Guerlain, the EDT only, on rainy days. As simple as it is, I find it cozy, comforting, and well-made. I am curious what others think of it. It has been discontinued, but is very inexpensive online right now.

I also adore Goutal’s Vanille Exquise for cold weather, I forget how good it is. Truly exquisite!

I am considering buying Bergamot Soleil by Atelier Cologne, I have tried it a few times and it was very nice. Has anyone else lived with it a bit longer than I have? My favorite of theirs is Grand Neroli, so I may just get another bottle of that. January 27, 2021 at 10:27pm Reply

    • Ava: *Souffle de Lumiere, not the other way around! January 27, 2021 at 10:27pm Reply

    • limegreen: I wanted to check in with you about bergamot from your Atelier Bergamot Soleil comment. I love the opening of it but decided against it in the end, the juniper drydown wasn’t working for my skin. My favorite Bergamot is Le Labo Bergamot 22. I recently came across a much more affordable bergamot, Essential Parfums Nice Bergamot. It’s kind of fleeting (about the same as Le Labo) but quite wonderful, and more natural cologne than perfume. (I don’t think it is all natural though.) They come in 10ml sizes! January 30, 2021 at 2:35pm Reply

      • Ava: thank you so much for commenting! i really appreciate the feedback. i will check out the le labo and also the essential parfums! January 30, 2021 at 5:21pm Reply

  • Karen A: Some ideas to think about, I’ve got PoaL, La Fille and CF. I’d say it depends on how you think you’ll be wearing them – La Fille is my go to rose, and it’s one that I get compliments on. PoaL is a powerhouse and I’d say can be too much in hot or humid weather, at least for me.

CF is gorgeous and wears well in all seasons. Maybe get a 10ml of it and a bottle of La Fille? Those are tbe three from your list that I know.

Have fun! January 28, 2021 at 3:16pm Reply

  • Klaas: About being on a budget…….Amsterdam based perfumery skins.nl does a archive sale at the moment. They sell top brands at big discounts (end of series, bottles without a box, slightly damaged bottles). There’s quite a few Frederic Malle’s this time: Une Fleur de Cassie, Le Parfum de Therese, Dans tes Bras, En Passant……Also a Carnal Flower oil. They go almost half price. Also some Penhaligon, Creed, Le Labo, Heeley….

You can see the items on sale only if you register on their website. It is free and takes a few seconds. Then hit the Archives-link.

PS Since you are in the Netherlands I have to mention that Le Galion’s new release of La Tulipe (I got a sample) smells like a fresh tulip in the opening! Impression doesn’t last but thought I would mention it, though you may dislike the stereotype associated with the Netherlands. January 30, 2021 at 10:35am Reply

              • Klaas: Thanks Limegreen! Let Galion has released quite some fragrances recently! Fresh tulips have a very particular smell, I would be curious to find out how that would work in a perfume. I’ll look it up when the shops open again.

There sure are a lot of tulips here, and we are quite fond of them. They come in all kind of colors and sizes, from the humble red tulip to the big baroque ones with the flamed leaves.

Buying fresh flowers is another small pleasure 😉 January 30, 2021 at 4:20pm Reply

                • limegreen: I used to visit tulip farms (field after field) in the Pacific Northwest in the spring, and yes, tulips have a very distinct green smell. Well, Le Galion’s attempt is far superior to Byredo’s! January 31, 2021 at 12:24pm Reply

      • Gabriela: Please tell me more about the oil, Im very tempted to buy it online with that discount! January 30, 2021 at 9:48am Reply

        • limegreen: If you love CF, you will love the oil!
The Malle body products are high in quality and really are in the fragrance in another format. Unlike some other lines where the fragrance is diluted or just lotion/oil with some scent that fades quickly.

Carnal Flower body butter is divine and when they released the oil, I had used up my jar of body butter so it was great timing. The body and hair oil absorbs nicely into the skin, and after putting it on my wrists and hands, elbows etc. I run my hands through my hair to lightly scent the hair. The oil seems “greener” than the fragrance (fresher?) but it is the same, just a lighter less indolic way to wear CF. I find it softer, which is friendlier in work environments, when one will be with people in close proximity again! In fact, I like putting some on at bedtime!
(I wear Une Rose and Dans Tes Bras body butter, too, though the latter has been discontinued.) January 30, 2021 at 10:14am Reply

          • limegreen: PS The fragrance in oil form still lasts almost all day but the oil is not greasy. January 30, 2021 at 10:19am Reply

            • Gabriela: What a beautiful description. Now I’m in doubt between the oil and the butter!!! Thank you for the explanation! January 30, 2021 at 10:58am Reply

              • Limegreen: If the oil is discounted…. 👍
The body butter is more concentrated fragrance and a moisturizer where the oil does not moisturize but just wonderful in scenting the hair.
Good luck deciding! January 30, 2021 at 11:48am Reply

  • Lindsey: Hello all! I have just recently become interested in perfumes, and I have learned that I’m a basic b when it comes to them. For example, I have/enjoyed Coco Mademoiselle, Balenciaga Paris, Le Labo Iris 39 (which my partner told me smelled like “10 old people chatting in a funeral home”), and, most recently, Chanel L’eau Venise. I thought I loved violet/iris because of the Balenciaga and Le Labo, but I got samples of Guerlain L’Heure Bleu, Serge Lutens Silver Mist, & FM Dans tes Bras aaaand I did not. Après l’ondée was nice, but more of an event perfume for me. I want to smell like a very rich lady who everyone thinks is just naturally clean and rich and smells great because her soul is clean and kind. That is probably no help. Good luck. • Tourmaline: Hi Lindsey,

I could put my tongue firmly in my cheek and suggest White Diamonds (Elizabeth Taylor 1991), but it’s actually not too bad.

More seriously, you could try White Linen (Estée Lauder 1978).

According to the great Michael Edwards’ fragrance classification system, both these scents are floral aldehydes of a crisp nature, with white flower notes.

You could also try Pleasures (Estée Lauder 1995), which is a floral of a fresh nature with green notes.

As you are a relative newcomer to perfume, I strongly suggest that, if you haven’t already done so, you do yourself a favour and buy a copy of “Perfumes: The A – Z Guide” by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez – the updated 2009 edition. Then buy
“Perfumes: The Guide” from 2018, which covers the decade since the previous book and reviews over 1,200 new fragrances. Not only are these books informative, they are highly entertaining!

If you already have the first book, look up the three fragrances I’ve mentioned. Both White Linen and Pleasures receive five stars and White Diamonds receives three. Look them up here on Bois de Jasmin as well.

The 2012 review of White Linen by Suzanna, who gave it five stars, is here.

      https://boisdejasmin.com/2012/11/estee-lauder-white-linen-fragrance-review.html

The 2008 review of Pleasures by Victoria, who gave it four stars, is here.

      https://boisdejasmin.com/2008/05/pleasures.html

I wish you luck on your fall down the perfume rabbit hole. I hope you find a fragrance you love.

      • Lindsey: Tourmaline –

Thank you so much for your kind and informative suggestions! I will definitely pick up those books.

Funnily enough, my grandmother wore almost exclusively White Diamonds and Youth Dew, and my mom wears Pleasures. Maybe I have a matriarchy to uphold? Any matriarchy where I am 70+ selling my perfume with a shirtless man, bouffant hair, and pro LGBTQ activism is one I want to be a part of, to be honest.

Thank you again for your help and direction!

Frederick Malle Dans te Bras – Teamster with a heart of gold but dabbled in the mob (A -The Irishman- background character)

I second White Linen, but if you want rich, elegant and clean, there really is no brand like Chanel. Nr. 19 (has iris!!), Cristalle (so gorgeous!!) or Nr. 5 (or its beautiful modern flanker Eau Premiere). If you can spend a bit more money maybe try Rue Cambon, Bel Respiro, Nr. 22 (but only if you like aldehydes!), Boy or even 1932.

Or crisp, clean and elegant Chanel pour Monsieur??

And since we are gender bending…….do you like vetiver? clean and chic all the way 😉 Guerlain Vetiver is a must try, and Chanel has Sycamore! Tom Ford Grey Vetiver is also easy to sample.

Not sure if you found anything yet…Neroli Intense is quite simple. I have a 30 ml bottle from Patricia de Nicolai, and for the price, I find it quite elegant. Best wishes to you! February 13, 2021 at 7:59pm Reply

  • Lisa: Hi! I’m in search for something new: I live in Finland and it’s freezing cold. My long time favorites that I keep on coming back to are Byredo’s Bal d’Afrique and Armani Privé Figuier Eden. In the summer I also love Hermes Jardin Mediterrannee.

I tried Pulp from Byredo, and like it but want something deeper for this time of year. Also tried Jazz Club & By the fireplace by Maison Margiela’s Replica. I liked both of them ok, but was not totally sold.

I some buy very masculine scents, but would now wish to find something a bit feminine or at least unisex.

Thank you for all and any tips!

  • Jacqueline: Hi, I’m desperately looking for a replacement for La Perla Classic, nowhere to find anymore..
I already have all the smell alikes from the 70/80’s, Knowing, Eau du Soir, Paloma Picasso, Aromatics Elixir and so on.. So my question is, do you have something in mind? I would love to find a niche perfume in this style! Any ideas? Thanks in advance! Jacqueline February 15, 2021 at 9:16am Reply

  • Jacqueline: Hi,can anyone recommend me a replacement for La perla classic? I already have Aromatics Elixir, Knowing, Paloma Picasso, Eau du Soir and more 70/80’s perfumes. I’d love to find a Niche Scent similar to these scents. Any suggestions? February 15, 2021 at 9:39am Reply

  • Marcy: I have many different scents and the ones I love the most I often “dole” out to myself to make them last. Recently I revisited Parfums DelRae Wit and fell in love all over again, but I didn’t know she closed her business! I had samples of other DelRae scents and really loved them. But Wit just makes me so happy. Can anyone recommend a scent that uses the Daphne flower or is reminiscent of Wit? I haven’t been able to find anything so far. February 19, 2021 at 6:36pm Reply

  • BrainbowZen: Dear All,
This past Christmas I stayed home, due to pandemic precautions, and the memory of this tea that the family has enjoyed together has haunted me these past two months. It is flavored with white grape, and it smells fruity and leafy and so, so warm. I am absolutely jonzin’ for something like that scent memory…dry pale grapes and tea that is bright and vegetal. If it had a drop of cream, that would also be perfecto! February 21, 2021 at 4:01pm Reply
