Hermès is launching a new interpretation of Eau des Merveilles, a blend of amber and woods developed in 2004 by perfumers Ralf Schwieger and Nathalie Feisthauer. L’Ambre des Merveilles is created by Hermès in-house perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena. Ellena already reinterpreted Eau des Merveilles as the gourmand L’Elixir des Merveilles and mossy Eau Claire des Merveilles.
L’Ambre des Merveilles includes notes of amber, vanilla, labdanum, and patchouli. It is described as sensual, mysterious and “almost aphrodisiac.” Available starting August at Hermès boutiques and department store counters. Via abc-luxe (thank you to Nicolette for alerting me to it!)

Ines: Sounds good to me! 🙂
Plus, I love the Elixir. July 26, 2012 at 7:05am
Victoria: I like Eau Claire, and I don’t remember Elixir. Curious about an even more ambery Eau des Merveilles. July 26, 2012 at 9:06am
Ines: I never tried Eau Claire. Elixir leans a lot towards being a masculine type of perfume, but I like that. It’s really good in my opinion. July 27, 2012 at 7:38am
Victoria: Would you say that Elixir would work for men? Amer was wondering about it below in the comments. Somehow I remembered that it was a sweet gourmand, but maybe I’m thinking of something else. July 27, 2012 at 8:09am
Ines: Definitely. My boyfriend loves it and almost used up my decant before I hid it. 🙂 July 27, 2012 at 8:11am
Victoria: Oh, good! Now, of course, I want to try Elixir myself. I like an idea of a masculine-gourmand. Thanks for adding a new “must try” to my list. 🙂 July 27, 2012 at 8:15am
gio: This sounds just right up my alley! Can’t wait to try it! July 26, 2012 at 10:21am
Victoria: I also look forward to it. Until Nicolette emailed me, I had no particular interest in any new fall perfume, but now I do! July 26, 2012 at 11:55am
Absolute Scentualist: I loved Eau Claire and haven’t yet tried Elixir. But the list of notes for this is really intriguing. Can’t wait to try it. July 26, 2012 at 10:34am
Victoria: Eau Claire is so lovely. Very true to Jean-Claude Ellena’s streamlined style. July 26, 2012 at 11:59am
Nicolette: Thank for posting this. It truly is gorgeous. I think if you like Elixir you will love this. It lasts for ages on the skin. I was fortunate to preview this at an Hermes boutique. I haven’t bought it yet but like it so much that I am seriously considering getting a bottle despite the fact I only just bought a gift set of the Hermessences last week! July 26, 2012 at 11:30am
Victoria: Thank you so much, Nicolette! I’m very curious about this launch, because I love the original Eau des Merveilles. Usually I don’t care for interpretations of the existing perfumes, but Ellena’s perfumes don’t often disappoint. I will a local Hermes boutique to see if they have it already. Undina: I haven’t tried Eau des Merveilles or any of the flankers yet. Why? I have no idea, somehow I missed the first one and then there were too many similar looking bottles… I have to start somewhere! L’Ambre des Merveilles sounds like a good starting point for somebody who likes amber perfumes, right? 😉 July 26, 2012 at 2:55pm
Victoria: If you haven’t tried anything from that collection, go for the original Eau des Merveilles. It’s so distinctive and unusual, a rich woody note over a salty-sweet ambergris. There is really nothing quite like it. July 26, 2012 at 4:21pm
Amer: I am very confused by all these versions. I can never recall which is which. The notes however sound great and not too feminine. Like some other releases from this line (that I can’t name for the life of me) this too sounds like something men can appropriate July 26, 2012 at 7:26pm
Victoria: Elixir might be on the sweet side, but all others are definitely suitable for men. July 27, 2012 at 7:28am
Natalie: This sounds pretty, but I’m kind’ve confused about why they would continually launch flankers of this. Why why why? There are soooo many. July 27, 2012 at 2:01am
Victoria: I guess because flankers are such a cheap way to launch a perfume. Everyone is trying to launch and launch, and Hermes is no exception to this. I do like its fragrances, even flankers, but even so, I wish that the collection were easier to navigate. July 27, 2012 at 8:05am
Emily: Just when I’d all but decided to spring for a bottle of Eau Claire des Merveilles (to supplement my beloved Eau des Merveilles), this comes along to tempt me. It’d be lovely if Hermes did a coffret with 15 mL bottles of the various Merveilles fragrances. July 27, 2012 at 2:41am
Victoria: I would love this! Since I have a thing for miniature bottles, I know that I would be very tempted by a coffret. July 27, 2012 at 8:05am
Ramona: Yipee! This sounds wonderful- I have both Elixer and Eau de Merveilles- Elixer is great in cooler weather and I love Eau in the warmer months. I dont think I NEED another permutation of this perfume, but I am sure I will give it a sniff and see what kind of magic happens 😉 July 27, 2012 at 9:54am
Victoria: I know what you mean. I hardly any more permutations on any perfumes (or any perfume, for that matter!), but I still want to try them. 🙂 July 27, 2012 at 10:47am
Nancy A.: Ooh, when I read the notes of labdanum and patchouli I thought that maybe this time around Merveilles would be appropriate since it borders on rancid on me in most strengths. And because I’m on this labdanum quest (for some strange reason, I cannot explain) this may work. I guess you can’t win them all! The autumn launches sound promising. July 28, 2012 at 10:07am
Victoria: Labdanum is a great quest, since it’s such a complex material. Have you tried Annick Goutal Ambre Fetiche? July 28, 2012 at 3:35pm
