Roses and Jasmine : Skin Toners

One of my favorite discoveries during my stays in Japan was the skincare. Any beauty store, from the glitzy establishments like Mitsukoshi and Takashimaya to the emporia like Matsumoto Kiyoshi and Ainz & Tulpe, has knowledgeable staff that not only can help you select the right products, but also diagnose your skin type and choose the right regimen. This is how I discovered the versatility and usefulness of face toners and mists. In my new column, Putting on the spritz: face mists, I cover some of my favorite products, both naturally scented and fragrance-free, as well as ways to incorporate them into a skincare routine.

Although my face toner schooling took place in Japan, most of the products I use are made by the American and European brands that offer well-formulated and interesting choices in all price ranges. I mention all of my top favorites in the article: Clinique, Tata Harper, May Lindstrom, Omorovicza, pure rosewater and more.

My favourite mists are hydrating and refreshing. They can also function as an aromatherapy session on the go. The latter is the reason why a bottle of rosewater is always in my bag. I usually buy natural distillate from a Middle-Eastern grocery store or pharmacy, making sure that the ingredients list includes nothing but distilled rosewater, and decant it into a portable spray container. One of the best rosewaters (£6.50 for 26cl) is made by Mymouné. Its scent is velvety and rich, and one spritz is all it takes for everything to come up roses – and to soothe the skin. To continue, please click here.

I didn’t include Hada Labo Gokujyun Clear Lotion, because it can be hard to find in the UK, but it’s an excellent hydrating toner from a well-known Japanese brand. It costs around $10 for 170ml, and it can be used right after washing one’s face, or decanted in a spray vial, as a mist throughout the day.

What face toners or mists are you using?

  • Caroline: Haven’t tried a mist since Evian, which honestly didn’t make a difference one way or another.
Might try one of these, though looking at the May Lindstrom ingredient list, the second one listed is witch hazel, which is a good astringent, but would limit my use of the product to a hot summer day. The scent sounds fabulous, though. October 10, 2016 at 8:18am Reply

    • Victoria: I agree, it’s just refreshing, especially in a hot tropical climate, but that’s about it. Of course, there are much more interesting face toners than Evian. As for May Lindstrom, it’s not particularly astringent. In fact, it’s one of the more soothing and hydrating toners I have. But it does contain natural essences, which may be a problem for very sensitive skins. October 10, 2016 at 8:29am Reply

  • Austenfan: I’m not much of a user of facemists but the Bioderma sounds great. The odd thing is that it’s not listed on the French website but I can find it really easily on the English one.

Plus I have taken note of the Hada Labo toner. I’m waiting for my first order of Japanese sunscreen and Hada Labo’s name has turned up quite a bit when researching which one to choose.

And as usual, thanks for such a great overview. October 10, 2016 at 8:34am Reply

    • Victoria: I bought this Bioderma in London when I realized that I forgot my mist at home and wanted something simple and refreshing for a trip. I liked it very much. It’s more interesting than just plain water.

Hada Labo is a popular brand, and it’s not expensive. Since in Japan there is a lot of competition in the skincare market, you can find many excellent brands at budget prices. October 10, 2016 at 8:53am Reply

      • Austenfan: I’ve come to realise that. I’m very curious to try the new sunscreen and see where it differs. October 10, 2016 at 9:06am Reply

        • Victoria: Did you get the Hada Labo sunscreen or Sunkiller we mentioned in the other post? October 10, 2016 at 12:34pm Reply

          • Austenfan: No, I got Sunplay. The one you mentioned in your first post on sunscreen.
Once that arrives I want to see how much import duty I will have to pay, and depending on that I have got my next order ready which will contain Sunkiller, and probably the Biore. Is the Hada Labo good as well? October 10, 2016 at 5:36pm Reply

            • Victoria: They have good sunscreens, although I haven’t yet tried their newest ones. October 12, 2016 at 3:24am Reply

  • Surbhi: I am using Lush’s eau roma water. It is lavender and rose water. I also love the smell of julrlique’s toner. I have only used it few times for smell so far and hence don’t know much about performance. October 10, 2016 at 9:33am Reply

    • Victoria: I used to love the smell of Jurlique serum (rose and sandalwood) until they reformulated it into something lavender like. October 10, 2016 at 12:34pm Reply

  • Mer: Great article! Do you buy the Mymouné rosewater online or in Brussels? October 10, 2016 at 10:19am Reply

    • Victoria: I bought it online, from Amazon, if I’m not mistaken. Or I buy it in Paris from Le Bon Marche. October 10, 2016 at 12:36pm Reply

    • amine: Hello, Mymoune rose water is not distributed in Brussels, however you can find it on http://www.buylebanese.com or, if you are visiting Paris at La Grande Epicerie de Paris. Or, closer to Brussels, at Les Epicentriques in Lille. October 17, 2016 at 3:17am Reply

  • Trudy: Thanks for the great post Victoria. I look forward to Bois de Jasmin notifications in the morning before starting my day! I love facial mists. The one I use most is Heritage Store Rose Petals Rosewater which I buy at Whole Foods. It’s about $10 for the large spray bottle. I think you can even get a better deal ordering online. I love it and use it every morning and throughout the day for its refreshing feel and soothing fragrance. I can’t be without it. I actually first read about it a couple of years ago on Bois de Jasmin so thank you for that. I also love Caudalie Hydrating Mist. It’s a bit more in price, about $18 for the 1 oz bottle but also so soothing. I buy that when I want to treat myself at Sephora. Thank you again for all the wonderful posts and topics. • Victoria: I also love Heritage Store Rose Petals Rosewater. It smells like a rose garden. I also spotted that this brand carries Lilac Water, but I haven’t tried it yet. October 10, 2016 at 12:38pm Reply

  • Sandra: I have used the refreshing hydration from Sisley Paris and right now I am finishing a mist from Tatcha.
I have red, dry, sensitive skin and I feel like mists and good skin care regimes really help with that. However, I am thinking of phasing out of the Sisley Paris line ( I use there confort extreme cream and eye cream) because its just way to expensive. Now that I am not working and have 2 little ones I can’t justify the price. If you anyone has any suggestions please let me know.. October 10, 2016 at 11:39am Reply

    • Victoria: Almost any hydrating mist, including the lower priced ones I mentioned, works just as well, if not better, than Sisley’s. It’s not a particularly outstanding formula. If you have dry, sensitive skin, I would recommend Hada Labo or Clinique.

The only product by Sisley I use and can’t replace is the eye cream. My eyes are extremely sensitive, and it’s the only cream that hydrates without any irritation or puffiness. One jar lasts me for a year. October 10, 2016 at 12:43pm Reply

      • Jackie: Victoria, that is great to hear about the Sisley eye cream! Funny enough, I just spoke to someone yesterday at a perfume counter who can use nothing but…, and she sees real benefits. I must get some! October 10, 2016 at 1:16pm Reply

        • Victoria: Although some say that a separate eye cream is not necessary, for me it’s essential. No other moisturizer I use for the rest of my face works under my eyes. October 12, 2016 at 3:26am Reply

      • sandra: That has always been my rational every time I have dished out the bucks for Sisley, that it last a long time. But I often wonder how it effects the product when you are constantly dipping everyday into a jar.
I have never heard of Hada Labo..I will look it up and thank you for your suggestions October 10, 2016 at 1:24pm Reply

        • Victoria: Not the best way to store cream. I’d love it in a tube. October 10, 2016 at 1:30pm Reply

          • Austenfan: Have you ever tried the Bioderma eye cream? I’ve been using it for years. I don’t really know how well it performs, but it’s the only one that doesn’t irritate my very irritable eyes. October 10, 2016 at 5:38pm Reply

            • Sandra: No-I don’t see Bioderma in the US that often-will take a look October 11, 2016 at 8:13am Reply

            • Victoria: I haven’t, but it’s reasonably priced and easy to find, so I will give it a try. October 12, 2016 at 3:27am Reply

              • Austenfan: Which Sisley eyecream do you use? I think I noticed 2 on a website selling their products.
Like you I have to use a separate eyecream. Else I’ll have red eyes for the rest of the day. October 12, 2016 at 6:38am Reply

                • Victoria: I have Sisleya Crème Contour Yeux et Lèvres (but I don’t use it around lips, only eyes!)

For me, a major issues is that while I need something to moisturize the area, I’m also prone to milia. Sisleya is the only cream that doesn’t cause milia and that hydrates well. I tried Odacite Baobab oil for the under eye area, and it was fine for the winter. In the summer, it was too heavy. October 12, 2016 at 6:49am Reply

                  • Austenfan: The Bioderma cream isn’t overly rich, so you might be fine.

On another note I’ve just tried Babassu oil for the first time, and it’s wonderful. Lighter than coconut oil and very hydrating. October 12, 2016 at 8:08am Reply

                    • Victoria: I haven’t yet tried Babassu oil, but since our bio store has it, so it should be easy to find. October 12, 2016 at 1:09pm

    • Jackie: Sandra, I have very sensitive skin, including rosacea. I have to avoid many skin care products (Tata Harper, sadly, sets my face on fire!) The ones I mentioned below are all fine for my sensitive skin. Also, Tatcha and First Aid Beauty are two others i have that feel great and don’t irritate my skin. In fact, they calm and refresh it.☺ October 10, 2016 at 1:13pm Reply

      • sandra: I can totally relate and its nice to find someone else who “suffers” from the same skin problems. I have noticed over the years that some “all natural” skin lines like Tata Harper aggravate my skin, and even ones that say no irritation like Paula’s Choice, gave me dermatitis on my face.
What have your tried from Tatcha? I have only tried their facial mist. October 10, 2016 at 1:21pm Reply

        • Jackie: Hi Sandra, Yes, it’s nice to “meet” someone with the same skin issues. 🙂 Some of the natural lines bother me too — I think some of the plant extracts or essential oils are too strong.

One of my daughters gets dermatitis on her face using anything with sulphates in it, including all around her mouth if she uses big-brand toothpastes!

Me, I turn beet red — and suffer days of rosacea irritation from anything with talc in it or silicone (including hair products). As long as I strictly avoid those two (and some of the scented stuff), though, my skin’s absolutely fine.

Anyway, in Tatcha, I’ve tried the Luminous Dewy Skin Mist. Is that the one you’ve been using? What do you think of it? I’m kind of meh.

In FAB, I’ve tried a lot of things, including their Vitamin Hydrating Mist. I like it well enough, but, for me, nothing beats the Murad Hydrating toner! 😉 (Honestly, nobody pays me to say that!)

I love many FAB products. Their Ultra Repair cream (or lotion) is a skin-saver when my skin’s irritated and for my above-mentioned daughter, who also suffers from occasional eczema. This stuff is like magic. I keep a big jar on hand in the winter.

I also like a lot of Ren products, which are natural and plant-derived but without strong scents. I just ordered a bottle of their new ahh-mazing Flash Hydro-Boost Instant Plumping Emulsion, based on trying a sample and being blown away! Their Flash Defence Anti-Pollution Mist is next on my list of facial mists to try.

          Have a great day! 🙂 October 11, 2016 at 1:05pm Reply

          • kpaint: I get dermatitis from sulfates, too, and dimethicone makes my scalp inflamed, itchy, and flaky. Fortunately it gets easier each year to find skin and hair products without either.

I’m actually sitting here with 3 skin patches on my back after a trip to the allergist yesterday to see if I can pinpoint what exactly it is that causes my occasional responses to skin and hair products.

REN makes some good stuff. I love their Flash Rinse 1 Minute Facial cleanser, Wake Wonderful Night-Time Facial, and Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask, though they may not be ideal for sensitive skin. I have a sample of the new Emulsion but haven’t tried it yet.

I also love the FAB ultra repair cream. I’ve never used it on my face but I stockpile it for the winter to put on my legs, which tend to get itchy from the dry and cold weather. October 11, 2016 at 2:11pm Reply

      • Sandra: And first aid, what have you tried ? October 10, 2016 at 3:14pm Reply

    • kpaint: Sandra – I just started using a product that you might really like. It’s Blithe Crystal Iceplant Pressed Serum, available at Sephora and Glow Recipe, and I happened upon it when I was looking for a gel-cream type moisturizer.

It’s richer and more hydrating than most other products in that category (compared to say, Laneige or Belif, if you’ve tried either of those.) It feels sooooo good on my skin. It’s really soothing and my skin just drinks it up and feels amazingly soft afterward.

It’s hydrating enough that I’m currently using it as the last step in my morning routine. (Their PR says “designed to condense serum and moisturizer into one step that nourishes and hydrates skin without heaviness.”) When winter hits, I’ll probably want to follow it with a cream.

I’m a skincare junkie and try lots of stuff all the time. This is one of the nicest products I’ve used in a long, long while, and it might work well for someone with skin like yours. It’s also very affordable – especially compared to Sisley 🙂 October 10, 2016 at 4:42pm Reply

      • Sandra: Thank you! I will seek it out for a try next time I am at sephora October 11, 2016 at 8:13am Reply

  • Tippie: I bought the Hada Labo toner the UK from Amazon. You have to pay a bit for shipping, but hey, it’s one of my favourites.
I also love the toner from SK-II, despite the price point. It’s bizarre, but I enjoy the slightly ferment-y smell it’s got. Also works great. October 10, 2016 at 11:58am Reply

    • Victoria: I want to try SKII, but nobody among my friends who uses it can explain how it benefits their skin. They just say that it’s pleasant (and many like the smell!) What do you enjoy about it? October 10, 2016 at 12:45pm Reply

      • Tippie: I find it well moisturizing and calming. I have dry patches and oily patches, and I think over time it helps bring everything to a more even condition. This effect stops when the bottle runs out, but I enjoy it while it lasts. I’ve gone through two bottles, by the way, and I had this effect both times. I also enjoy that it’s watery! Absorbs without residue. And yes, just.. pleasant. Nice feel to it.
But oh my god the price. October 10, 2016 at 12:53pm Reply

        • sandra: I have tried their essence and found that it didn’t “wow” me, but it calmed my skin down October 10, 2016 at 1:23pm Reply

      • Jackie: Victoria, Mind you, I have sensitive skin but the SKII aggravated my skin something fierce! I like the idea of it, but other ferment-based products have also irritated my skin. Lucky you, Tippie: that’s the effect I was hoping for. 🙂 October 11, 2016 at 1:10pm Reply

I can’t live without facial mists and sprays! I am absolutely addicted to Murad’s Hydrating mist, which I’ve been using for years. I use it after cleansing and throughout the day, including over makeup, and I sing its praises at every opportunity! Highly recommended!

I’m also really enjoying Philosophy’s new one: very hydrating and refreshing and with great skin-care benefits. Fresh has a new rose spray that is just lovely.

Also, ever since an earlier article you wrote on rosewater sprays, I’ve kept a bottle in the fridge, which the whole family enjoys on hot summer days. 😉 I will seek out Mymoune too!

  • kpaint: There are few things more refreshing than a spritz of mist. Years ago I used both the Murad and Caudalie ones people have mentioned. These days I’m deeply entrenched in asian beauty, and my favorite mist is Secret Key Starting Treatment Aura Mist. It’s both hydrating and has a delightful floral scent. The ‘Starting Treatment’ line is a knock off of SK-II but costs a fraction of the price. The mist is currently available at amazon (US) for 14.99.

I’ve also come to love using a mist as the last step of my makeup routine, primarily for the soothing effect but also to add a bit of moisture and to help with blending. I’ve been liking Laneige Water Bank Mineral Skin Mist because it comes out in a very fine mist – probably due to the fact that it’s mostly water. It feels good on my skin nevertheless 🙂

I’m also a big fan of Acwell Licorice pH Balancing Cleansing Toner, which I decant into a spray bottle and use as the first step in my morning skincare routine. It has 10% licorice, which amongst other things, is supposed to counteract redness. My chest tends to get red and bumpy so I started using this to see if it had any effect, and it seemed to work. I stopped using it a few weeks ago to try some other products in that slot and the redness has returned! Note that if you want to spray it on it can discolor fabrics, so apply it and let it set before you get dressed. I buy it from memebox.com, which is a great asian beauty site that ships from within the US. October 10, 2016 at 6:42pm Reply

    • Victoria: You have so many choices for sites that sell Asian cosmetics in the US. My mom also liked Peachesandlily.com.

        • Victoria: I buy it from Aroma zone, and it comes in a powder form. I usually add a tiny amount to lukewarm water and then mix it into my clay or yogurt masks. In general, I look for this ingredient in my skincare, since I think that it does make a difference. October 12, 2016 at 6:09am Reply

          • rainboweyes: Oh yes, Aroma Zone, how could I forget… In the meantime I also found an alcohol extract at Behawe but I think powder might be a better option. I have several powder masks which I use on a regular basis, so it should be easy to add some licorice powder before mixing them with water or yoghurt. I also think that licorice does make a difference, that’s why I like Whamisa and Ekia so much. What are your favourites? October 13, 2016 at 3:46am Reply

            • Victoria: I usually make a Moroccan clay mask by mixing Rassoul clay, rosewater, milk and some licorice extract. I keep it on for about 10-15 min.

Or I make a simple yogurt mask + licorice + banana. I have always developed a taste for licorice tea, which is perfect if you tend to get dry, scratchy throat in the winter. October 13, 2016 at 10:01am Reply

  • OperaFan: I’ve been a big toner enthusiast from way back, and only in recent years have I started treating them more as a leave-in treatment than just a final step in my cleansing routine. These days, I swipe on micellar waters with cotton pads at night, and pat on toners and lotions in the mornings.

I’ve always loved the smell of Clarins toners, both normal and combination skin formulas, and use them both ways (as described above), and also the Caudalie beauty elixer which I use as a refresher spritz. A partial mini bottle resides in y work desk, and sometimes it’s enough to just open up the cap and take a whiff.
Thanks to your (Dear V) enthusiasm over rosewater, I keep a bottle at home and use it to enhance my toner/lotion.
I also have a mini bottle of the SKII essence as part of an introductory set I purchased in Narita this summer. I am looking forward to trying it this winter once my current bottle of Laneige toner runs out. October 11, 2016 at 12:35pm Reply

    • Victoria: I’m very happy that my rosewater love has spread. It’s definitely an excellent, versatile product. October 12, 2016 at 3:38am Reply

  • Annikky: I use and like all the toners you mention with the exception of Bioderma (will try now!) – unfortunately, I believe May’s is my favourite. I think the Tacha spray is nice, too, and I enjoy the La Mer mist although what it produces is more like heavy rain. There’s also an Estonian brand called Lumi that has a birch mist (with steam-distilled birch buds) – different and refreshing. October 11, 2016 at 1:38pm Reply

    • Victoria: Lumi! And birch leaves. My grandmother used to make face toners with birch leaves and buds, so I’d be interested to try this toner. October 12, 2016 at 3:40am Reply

      • rainboweyes: Lumi sounds good, thanks for recommending! Dabba has a lovely birch leaf toner too but I think my favourite is the Säihke Softening Toner with birch sap by Mia Höytö (her Lumous serum is another wonderful product btw). October 12, 2016 at 5:40am Reply

        • Victoria: I seem to recall researching Mia Höytö after you mentioned this brand before. I need to see about the toner, because I’m almost out of May Lindstrom and Hada Labo and I need something else in this category. October 12, 2016 at 6:11am Reply

  • Liliane: Do you know the recept how your grandmother made it?
Do you have some other recepts? October 12, 2016 at 5:12am Reply

    • Victoria: Unfortunately, no, I don’t know how she made it. I was too little to be interested. October 12, 2016 at 6:08am Reply

  • Liliane: For me it’s the same my grandmother made a lot. I was also too little!
But I remember that they had bottles in the tree.
And it have too receipt the water next a cutting from the tree.
So I think than you have real autentic kwality for a good price.
I living in a wood so I can nearly doo this.
    It’s+ great idee!
I gonna pratice this. And watch the results later…
If it’s work than I written over this. October 12, 2016 at 8:03am Reply

  • Marsi: I love the hydrating rosewater-based sprays by Mario Badescu and Glossier, and the Eau de Raisin by Caudalie. But good old rosewater is a longtime standby. Always have had terrible luck with the nozzle of Avene go bad and stop working, so I finally have given up on trying. October 13, 2016 at 10:26pm Reply

    • Victoria: I didn’t have any problems with Avene’s nozzle until my recent repurchase. It also stopped working, but I can tell that there is lots of liquid inside the bottle. October 14, 2016 at 5:27am Reply

  • Notturno7: Great suggestions, everyone! Thanks 😍.
I wrote lot of things down from this post.
Lately, I’ve been using Estée Lauder Micro Essence lotion and Shiseido Benefiance toner-like lotion. My skin just loves these. I got them as big size samples, part of free gift with purchase sets. I also love the new Shiseido toner in the red bottle but I forgot the name 😐.
I bought a bottle of rose water spray from the health food store, but it doesn’t do much for me. It feels drying. Maybe I need to try a different product. October 15, 2016 at 4:49am Reply
